The lost village of Hallsands

The lost village of Hallsands
The old road to the village: now forbidden!
On a stormy night in January 1917, the Devon fishing village of Hallsands collapsed into the sea. The entire village was destroyed together with the livelihoods of its people. For decades the fishing village of Hallsands and its stunning coastline had been at the mercy of the forces of nature and on this dreadful night, all was finished.

I agree with you there. we were not to go down that road either. In my younger days I might have gone down the ladders though :) A sad place really.

Thanks Rosa. Yes, a place full of history, almost forgotten now but for this special platform with stories and photos of the events here. I think the ladders still allowed some people to visit the two buildings still standing here.

The history of Hallsands is all important. Not far behind us is the new village, but never the same.
Another to please you here. ~ Herb

Nature is unpredictable and powerful, and always stronger than men's works! Now it's a ghostly sight, but I suppose it remains in memory... In Brittany we have also a ghost village, but under the waters of a big lake see 3 PiP which had been taken during the draining of the lake once every 10 years.

Thanks so much for this Christa. I am happy that you looked at the history here but remember too that this was caused as much by man as nature. - Your photo reminds me of the sunken village of Derwent, at a nearby reservoir to me too.

I went to read the history and there were a lot of responsibility. If I I understand right they had luck that nobody died.
Herb Riddle club has replied to Daniela Brocca club
Thanks for reading that Daniela. Yes you are right, the greed of man had in reality caused this to happen by dredging the seas near here and altering the historic tides to become dangerous at this place. They were very lucky that nobody died.

They lived dangerously! I see no trees! Is there anybody still living there?
Herb Riddle club has replied to Eva Lewitus club
Hi Eva. Not many trees just here but quite a few small woods not too far away. The village was completely cleared after the disaster and I am quite sure nobody would live in the one big house that sits there still. However a new very small village is just a few hundred metres behind me here, a little further from the sea and not a fishing community like the old one was. The link, tells the story better. I have mapped this now and you might see that the old village was called South Hallsands and the newer one North Hallsands. ~ Herb

A superb image Herb.................very well composed and taken............but completely eclipsed by the story of how the village was lost. Such a sad tale...................of big business getting it's own way no matter what the cost to others and the environment. We still haven't learned have we? Fracking springs to mind!

Also, I can't believe I'd never heard of this before now...............

Another to give you cause to ponder Keith. Indeed, a sad story of man and its greed. As you say, still not unknown in the World today. Besides Fracking, Brazil's rain forest fires comes to mind too. I bet there are some more places like this, hidden in history and by water, around the British Isles. I had not heard if it either until I got there but my wife Eileen knew what was to come.

Hi Herb

Very nice picture, and sad story associated with it, but we must respect the forces of nature, they are greater than we are!

Best Wishes, and a good weekend

Thanks Peter, yes nature was the final destroyer here but sadly, instigated by man.

Interesting image and memorable history.
With the rising seas, many more places and likely lives will be lost. Our world is changing rapidly and not for the better, I fear.

Thanks for this Sarah, and spoken from the heart. As today's news reaches us about the latest hurricane to hit the Bahamas and US coast, sadly what you say is quite true.

Hi Herb.
The serene beauty of this coastline on a bright day immediately fascinated me.
Of course, the terrible story behind it has once again reminded me how human greed so careless of the consequences could and continues to unleash.
And it's right to tell them and remember them.
Best wishes and a very nice weekend.

Thanks for this Bea. yes, the story should and does prevail and even man's greed towards others is remembered here too. There are sadly all too many places in the World that have similar stories.

Have a great week, Herb
