Very nice picture and clever composition
From time to time I have tried this kind of shot from the moors, but never successfully. Too cloudy, too much light pollution, etc etc. So I admire your result here!!

Hi Peter, always nice to see you and your comments here. I actually went up her, on this very cold night (2C and windy) to do some experiments for 'star trails'. I got some but not quite what I wanted so will have another go at that again -if the stars ever shine for me again here with this continual murk we have. This panoramic shot was just an afterthought but I was pleased with it. Slightly disappointed that it looks nowhere near as sharp on here as it does on my original .As to you, I would give it another try sometime -sometimes we do have clear nights and if it works it will be worth the effort I am sure. - Are you still in Germany?

Herb the night comes alive when you see all the parts a lot of detail in the full size shot at the largest size possible. you do have a string you are trying to push up hill when I see all those lights I like the fact no matter what you have never given up and still come up with stunning shots like this. I may Be lighten just a little just my own preference Top marks. just imagine when you get out into the REAL BLACK what you can do with all this under your belt....

Thanks a lot Steve. Yes viewed large and the F11 key pressed so that there is no menu, it comes alive as you say. A pity, in a way, that I have to put my signature there which detracts somewhat.

You will note I dumped the signature as well , you can always replace the photo with out it a very handy option I also use.

Have done as you suggested -sig removed. Looks better full screen now.

That's really rather superb. That location looks like it would be a great place to view the incoming comet Iwamoto, around the end of the month. Weather permiting of course...

Thanks my friend. Yes a high point with views all around but with our constant cloudy weather not much chance of seeing comets from here, especial with this very bright light-polluted sky.

Totally breathtaking, Herb. I just love this as a wide wide wide panorama! The sparkling city lights are just so pretty against the blackness around. I also totally loved that you provided a daytime pano as well so we can compare. Super cool. Thank you for this great show!

Nice to see you again Janet. Yes the views from up there are breathtaking on a clear day. Quite often I am not happy to see all these lights, of roads, towers and buildings, as they all provide massive light pollution in that area that I can see some 20 mile away. That is certainly no good for me to see the stars and Milky Way as I would like for photography but these city lights make for an impressive panorama as you agree and that we both enjoy. Glad you liked my daytime view of the pike too -my pleasure to share with you here Janet.

A great night panorama, Herb, particularly viewed large. That said, it's easy to understand the light pollution problem you face when doing astro imagery.

Good to see you here George. I am always flattered when I know a person who visits my night shots is an expert on astro-photography. Yes, a very nice capture of these lights here, and as you can see and say, this makes astro shots almost impossible, or at least very difficult. Ah well, everything has its compensations maybe.

A truly a great picture Herb. It brought back memories of my journeys to and from work (Rochdale to Dobcross) over Buckstones Road and Grains Bar in the 1970s.

Whilst mostly in daylight there were some late working or winter evening trips when I travelled in the dark. I would often pull in to admire the view.

I recall one particular morning leaving home in thick fog and likewise arriving at Dobcross bearly able to see very much ahead but as I climbed Buckstones Road it became crystal clear over the top, a bright cloudless blue sky. Looking down towards Oldham all that could be seen were the tallest of the factory chimneys sticking out of the cotton wool looking fog that spread as far as the eye could see.

Hi David, great to see you here. It is always good to see my photos bringing back happy memories. As you know, up on the heights surrounding Oldham, Saddleworth and Rochdale, we can often see a delightful view. Unlike you, I have very rarely seen such views with the mist below me. I t must have always been that I was either tucked up or at work. Still one or two chimneys about but looking from here at Hartshed Pike, it is mainly skyscraper and towers and bright lights.

A great night shot and definitely a must viewed large! I can even see a few stars for all the light pollution:-) Excellent stitching, too- I have rarely tried this with night shots.
