Gleensk Viaduct- Ring of Kerry
The start of the famous 'Ring of Kerry' for us, despite 'doubtful weather' brings us to this very interesting structure. Made even more so when you read the description below:

"The Gleensk Viaduct is a fine example of railway engineering and was part of the Great Southern and Western Railway Line which ran from Valentia Island Harbour to Farranfore Junction for nearly one hundred years. This now disused and dismantled railway line was one of the most spectacular train journeys in the world, the western most in Europe and a tourist attraction that Ireland can only dream of now." - www.activeme.ie/guides

in a time when you just dont need graffiti what do you get the whole gamut. love the old stone work clouds add the country side.

Aye Steve, one wonders how such graffiti was put on there. We were only there for a few moments (you can see my car) -it would have been great to walk this stretch of the railway path over the viaduct but... Glad you liked it.

Thanks for this Colin. Yes, we all looked for different things in our youth :) This was actually a stunning and unique sight that one came across quite suddenly when travelling the length of the 179km -111 miles of the the Kerry Ring, so not easily missed, unless fighting with your siblings in the back seat of course!

Always good when you can follow my trips in such detail David. Isn't GE great for such things! In fact we could literally stop taking live photos and just screen-shot GE street-view shots and we would be seeing virtually the same thing and in some cases, at a much better quality and viewpoint.

This is certainly an impressive feat of engineering...........which still looks in pretty good condition. I like the fact they seem to have used local stone instead of iron or brickwork!

Thanks a lot Keith for this visit and observation. Yes a very interesting structure indeed with an obvious history. We never saw anybody walking the grassy railway walk but I presume it is still in use for that. Glad you liked it.
