Part 4—Dreams of a Big Flower Garden: Seeds, Bulbs & Planting Time!!
Janet Brien9 comments1525 visits2One of the most exciting parts of a new flower garden is selecting and planting all of the different bulbs and seeds. As you'll see, I went completely bonkers with all of the choices available!
Part 1—My New Adventure: A Raised Bed Flower Garden!
Janet Brien4 comments1599 visits1For the first time in my life, I'm going to have a big flower garden! I'm really excited and would like to share my adventure, so I'm going to write about my experience as it unfolds, beginning with a bit of history in this article—let's just say I I haven't always been a fan of gardening!
Part 6—Dreams of a Big Flower Garden: 2-Week Progress Report and Lots of Baby Pictures!
Janet Brien10 comments4922 visits3This beautiful seedling is a King Henry Hollyhock! There are 6 other seedlings and since I took this picture, each is showing off their second set of leaves. (I also have a section of Black Hollyhocks. Only one has sprouted so I will be planting more seeds in the hopes that more will germinate.) There's a Party Goin' On Round Here! I planted my garden two weeks ago last Monday, and a lot's been happening out there! It's really exciting to see seedlings push their way up and out of the g… (read more)
My little spirea bush is flowering.......
Jenny McIntyre10 comments126 visitsA couple of years ago I discovered a wonderful bush growing just in the corner of my driveway. The flowers were so small and for a quick look they looked as if they were just fuzzy little pink flowers. Well I took a couple of photos then and was so delighted to discover that the "fuzziness" was in fact lots of different little flowers. Unfortunately ever since then, the bush hadn't flowered. Imagine my delight yesterday when I discovered it had bloomed again - probably because of the wet and… (read more)
My hoya has flowered again after 3 years....
Jenny McIntyre12 comments122 visits1When Mickey last came down, about 3 years ago, he helped me to re-pot my hoya. Now this plant had been in a smallish pot in my bedroom for years - about 15 - and it was very good and flowering quite copiously. Well Mickey helped me to get it out of the existing pot (which showed it was extremely pot bound) and into a large pot with new compost and food etc. As it's a climbing plant, it had wound itself round and round a few sticks I'd put in the pot to support it. What I hadn't realised is t… (read more)
My poor flowers are desperately trying to stay blooming
Jenny McIntyre3 comments276 visitsIt's been a trying couple of days - the sky has been the same now - an overall cover of 'orrrible grey - all one colour and so depressing. Still I can't complain because I've had two weeks of gorgeous blue sky - apart from a couple of days when we had that storm. I suppose I can't complain neither because it's not been too cold, even though it's towards the end of October and I haven't had to put any heat on. Anyway I decided to venture outside inbetween showers and have a look at my pots to… (read more)
Part 2—Dreaming of a Big Flower Garden: Time to Get Serious
Janet Brien7 comments1028 visitsWith the success of my front garden and metal feed trough planter, I began thinking about how nice it would be to have a large garden where I could plant many kinds of flowers. I realized that we already had the perfect spot, it just needed some work to prepare: our abandoned raised bed, originally built years ago for a one-time vegetable garden.
Well the odd flower is still hanging in there...
Jenny McIntyre11 comments152 visits2Despite the fact that it's November and it's getting increasingly cold, some flowers are trying desperately to hang in there. I went out into the driveway and saw that there were very few flowers still blooming... The pansy is almost obliterated, but it comes back time and time again. I think this plant is about 5 years old. I really must plant some new ones next spring.... There's a little bunch of mallow sprouting up and although there aren't many flowers h… (read more)
The flowers in the lounge are growing like mad!!!
Jenny McIntyre8 comments184 visits2Even though we've had a lot of very cold weather - I think the double glazing has helped by not letting the freezing cold get to them. When there is a little bit of sun, they relish in it. The hoya has seen fit to try and escape through the pelmet at the top of the window!!!! When Emily comes on Tuesday, I'll ask her to tie it back again!!!! It's lovely seeing the red splashes of colour from the "flamingo plant"...... but Emily bought me a Bromeliad plant with a lovely… (read more)

She and her husband are out in their garden nearly every day if possible and I can only applaud their achievements. Here are some of their gorgeous flowers.............. I've got some indoor flowers too......
Jenny McIntyre8 comments106 visitsOn my kitchen window sill I have got three plants - two are flowering, the other one has decided to stop flowering this year. One of them is a gorgeous white rose which was given to me by Mandi as a Mother's Day pressie. For a few years it only gave me one bloom, then last year I had 3 blooms, but this year ...... I've got 7....... it's exceeded itself As you can see - it's a glorious creamy white. The problem with white is you can't really see the varying shades with… (read more)
Part 10: Dreams of a Big Flower Garden: An Explosion of Color!!
Janet Brien8 comments2625 visits5Despite the attacks from insects and ground squirrels, my raised bed garden has flourished and is an Eden-oasis in the middle of our bone-dry property!
Part 11: Dreams of a Big Flower Garden: Pumpkin Patch Update!
Janet Brien8 comments4414 visits6The vertical pumpkin patch is a success and I am slowly training the vines up the trellis that Steve made for me!
That funny flower and others..................
Jenny McIntyre15 comments135 visitsSome of you have asked me to take a picture of this weird flower only a bigger one so you can see if you can identify it - well here it is ............. These are the leaves of the flower - the plant itself is about 2ft high and very spindly. When I came across the others in the driveway - I seem to remember a yellowy plant there - so maybe it has yellow flowers?? Anyway I went to look at the sweetpea in the hedge, but Peter had cut them back when he did the trimming -… (read more)
Some lovely flowers to cheer us up.
Jenny McIntyre11 comments159 visits1As we are all going through some horrendous times, with the COVID19, I thought I would take some pictures of the beauty surrounding my home at the moment. I hope it gives you some pleasure as it does me - of course I've got it all the time, but you can see what I'm getting at. I'm really scared about what's going on in the world - I normally stay indoors on my own anyway, so that part of the "lockdown" isn't too hard for me, but the fact that I can't go and see my daughter in Turkey, nor my s… (read more)
flower, big shop and postie brings nice surprise
Mickey fez6 comments159 visitsIf you are having withdrawal symptoms because Jenny is away and not posting photos of flowers, here is a pretty bloom brightening up a dull rainy day, I snapped it in the little haven. Today was my big shop day at Iceland.I have two freezers a front loader and a chest freezer.Stocks were running low and half empty freezers don't save much money. Iceland also sell most foodstuffs the big boys do only cheaper.I found some terrific bargains and managed to spend £42,that's around $67 No charge for… (read more)
Part 3—Dreams of a Big Flower Garden: Preparing and Deer-Proofing the Raised Bed
Janet Brien6 comments1155 visitsEven though I'd pulled all the weeds out, I still had a lot of work to do before I could plant seeds, but I was now a juggernaut of excitement because my dream was going to come true!
Part 5—Dreams of a Big Flower Garden: What Did I Plant?
Janet Brien5 comments1326 visits3This is my master list of the flowers and bulbs I planted this year. I may add a sorted version below this one to identify which are annuals, biennials and perennials. I need to keep track of what species germinated (and how many?), which seem to be dead, and other notes. I may add pictures as they bloom or maybe I'll do that a different way. For now, this is my list. If you have experience with any of these flowers, I'd really be interested to know that you have to say! (Easy to grow, bugs eat… (read more)
Seagull babies and some new flowers at Ann's
Jenny McIntyre12 comments138 visitsWell the weather is starting to drive me nuts - each morning it dawns all drizzly and dull and so there's nothing that I can do, then just around 4pm or so each afternoon, it clears up and we have lovely sunny days. It's too damn late for me to do anything and so I'm getting quite fed up. I really need to trim down the hedges and do some more weeding in the driveway - but it's either raining or it's too wet to sit on the ground and weed....... hmmmm grrrr........ okay rant over. Yesterday my… (read more)
There are still loads of flowers blossoming there....
Jenny McIntyre4 comments104 visitsI didn't expect to see a lot of flowers still blooming out there in Turkey - I mean I was going there in October, but I was pleasantly surprised..... In Mandi and Dogan's driveway there are still some bouganvillea out and they are just fantastic.......... I mean - how can you not be an admirer of such a beautiful flower. I know it grows in abundance over there and I mentioned to Mandi that if I had a house there, I'd have that gorgeous flower growing up… (read more)
