Hafen Hamburg
Der Hamburger Hafen ist der grösste Seehafen in Deutschland und nach dem Hafen Rotterdam und dem Hafen von Antwerpen der drittgrösste in Europa (Stand 2017).
Schifffahrtsrouten verbinden den Hamburger Hafen mit mehr als 900 Häfen in über 170 Ländern.
2018 wurden hier Gesamtgüter von 135,1 Mio. Tonnen umgeschlagen. Davon betrug der Containerumschlag 89,4 Mio. Tonnen. Das sind 8,73 Mio. TEU Container (TEU = Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit = 6,058 x 2,438 x 2,591m).

Schweiz: Im Jahr 2016 betrieben sechs Reedereien insgesamt 49 Schiffe mit 1'031'713 BRZ (Bruttoraumzahl) unter Schweizer Flagge. Die schweizerische Handelsflotte hat eine Tragfähigkeit von insgesamt 1,7 Mio. Tonnen, dies entspricht ca. 1 Promille der Welttonnage.

Impressive machinery! I like both photos. How do the cranes operate when they are so close together? I don't see how there could be room for the booms to swing around.

Very clever question! But in the PIP you can see that they don't need to swing sidewards. They only move back and forth. The whole crane is on wheels and can move sideways.

Yes, I saw the PiP. So, if they are lifting cargo there must be a track that pulls a stack of containers backward. Then how do the containers get down to the dock? Let me think about that for awhile...

Diane, sorry, => the video is in German, but nevertheless you get an idea how it works with the cranes. They pack the containers from the lorry or railway car and take them to the ship.

Thank you for those, poly, very enjoyable! I had no idea how ports operate in the US and found videos showing the same basic system, but a different manufacturer. Well, I suppose it's the same at large ports all over the world. Interesting! I liked the German video best because it shows the man up in the controls and how the job is done.

Diane, yes, I also think it's similar all over the world. It's been a few years since I was in the port of Rotterdam (the largest in Europe). That was also very impressive.
Me, as an inland person I am fascinated by harbours. They convey a feeling of the big wide world and make you feel a certain wanderlust.

Exactly! I crave the seashore all the time. The best place I ever lived was within walking distance of the beach. I miss it so much! Funny thing is, I was born near a harbor and lived there for the first 6 years of my life. The town was even called Harbor!

Well, I can take comfort in having at least the mountains near me. They also exert a great fascination. I hope I can still climb them for a long time. Fortunately there are now almost everywhere mountain railways :-)
