The Kench

These three images were taken on Hayling Island, Hampshire. The Kench is a small naturally protected inlet which is mainly a nature reserve. To the left (out of shot) is a small private mobile home site. During the national housing shortage of the 1950s several surplus military boats were purchased and converted into living accommodation in the form of house boats located in this protected harbour, several of which are still in use today. Unfortunately I couldn't get much closer to the boats as the whole area is fenced off and private.

A wonderful photographic sandwich, the sky with those spectacular clouds, the center, with its mobile homes and boats and the coast in the foreground.
Here no one can be the owner of the coastline or the riverbank and neither can anyone build less than 100 meters from the coast. Have a nice Sunday Keith.

It is a shame about the fence, but you have to respect the privacy of people living there. Access to the main part of the nature reserve is unrestricted though.

It is very quiet and peaceful there at this time of year.........but quite busy in the middle of summer. I believe most of the houseboats are holiday homes. I've never seen inside them, but from the outside they seem well cared for and are surprisingly large.

I love that sky Keith. So beautifully captured and when I look at the main picture full screen I can pick out what is in the two PiP's. In fact my favourite of the three is the first PiP with the union flag and the lovely boat shaped cabin with the balcony!

The houseboats are really lovely - I think most are holiday homes. I've never seen inside of any of them, but they seem very well cared for.

The one you particularly liked was completely refurbished over the summer.

I think there may have been some sort of army or navy accommodation there during or not longer after the war, as my mum talks about living there while her father was a docter attached to the royal Navy and stationed either on Hayling Island or Thorney island. I suppose i should look it up!

There was (and still is) an Army barracks on Thorney Island (Baker Barracks). There were also several Royal Navy bases on Hayling Island..........in and around Northney. In fact two of the sites remain and are currently holiday camps. There are several concrete pill boxes and shelters around Hayling Island and evidence of old anti-aircraft gun emplacements too, at least two buildings I know of used to be used by the Army in WW2 and possibly before. Both are now residential.

I'm sure you'll find lots more online.

Hier ist es vor allem der Himmel bei allen drei Fotos, der die Stimmung macht..und ich frag mich jetzt, wie es wohl aussieht, wenn das Wasser wieder zurück ist...ich würde dort übrigens auch gerne mal übernachten (wenn kein Sturm gemeldet ist :)
