Thanks, Joe. Until the 1950s or 60s the federal government filled Canada with impressive buildings. Even small towns here have stunning public buildings (usually the post office). Then the government started renting office space. Here's a link to a better view of this building:

I wonder how Post Offices survive these days. They seem to do so but probably by offering different services in different countries. A fine urban street scene, John!

Thanks, Andy. Canada Post owns a courier company, so that's helped. Personal mail, though, has virtually disappeared. They may make some money off parcels, since they deliver to more sparsely populated regions than the private companies will.

But then I guess that's not a money-making proposition, but a public service.

As I understand our Post Office, it's in the unenviable position of being regulated by the Federal government, but does not get any funds from them. They were saddled by a large, unfunded pension liability from the beginning, and are slowly sinking under its weight. I won't go into the politics of the situation, since my views would be rather partisan.

The facade of this one - is it a heavy art-deco? And it looks like London clears its streets well. A virtue much in demand at the moment.

In 1981 the Canadian post office was converted into a Crown corporation, Bob -- it's officially owned by the Queen but operates at arm's length from the government. It's had some years recently where it didn't turn a profit but as far as I know receives no subsidies other than for delivering mail free for MPs, etc. I could be wrong.

I would call this an Art Deco building, but it's officially classified as an example of Modern Classicism. There's a link to a view of the southern and eastern elevations in my reply to Joe.

London gets a lot of snow, so there's no messing around with it. Toronto seems to be backsliding, however. They had problems dealing with a big snowfall a few days ago, problems like the ones they had coping with the big blizzard of 1999.

It's quite a building, Denis. In the bigger cities the old Dominion Public Building is always one of the best buildings in town.
