The leaf decal is used on our window to prevent birds from striking and injuring themselves.

The dome of the Alberta Legislature Building is behind a span of Edmonton's newest bridge that was opened this year. The red on the bottom of the frame are light streaks from the traffic.
Add Some Drama

|
|

For the Saturday Self-challenge: Process anything. I let the dramatic art filter on my camera do most of the work this week and then enhanced the drama on Lightroom. Looking out my back door at sunset.

We had an unusual September snow this week with temperatures hovering around 0 Celsius. The white background is snow. See PIP for other snowy garden shots.

Protecting the Flowers

We had an unusual September snow this week with temperatures hovering around 0 Celsius. My wife brought some of the pots inside the house to protect them from the snow and the cold. Guard kitty is doing his part.

Snow on the Leaves

An unusually early snowfall comes to our backyard. The peonies are long gone but the remaining leaves caught the snow beautifully.

Saturday Self-challenge: Squares and/or rectangles.
The effect was created with an in-camera art filter.

For the Saturday Self-challenge: foreground bokeh. In the PIP is another photo of the same bird in the same place. I found this one on a pond near our house. Although they are not rare in our area, this is the first time I had seen one. I was particularly surprised to see it in the city.

Great Blue Heron

This Great Blue Heron was found in a pond on the south side of Edmonton. It will not find any fish in this water but it has been hanging around for a few days. I have rarely seen a Heron in Alberta and never in the city.

For the Saturday Self-challenge: Use the window as a frame. The decals on the windows are placed on the outside. This spring we had a number of bird strikes on the window and it was injuring the birds. The reflection made them think it was a continuation of the yard and they were flying fast against the window. The decals act as a deterrent because even though we can barely see them, it acts like spotlights to the birds and they veer away.
Sight and Sound: Placido Domingo and Placido Flamingo sing “Look Through The Window” on Sesame Street.

PIPs: A photo I made a couple of weeks ago when the smoke from Western Canadian fires was so thick that it choked our sky several hundred kilometres away.
The second is one of the first photos I posted on Ipernity. It was the view from our hotel room in Piana, Corsica. To the left was the ocean.
New Walterdale Bridge
|
|
|
|
This is Edmonton's newest bridge completed in 2018. It replaced a bridge that was built in 1913. It spans the North Saskatchewan River. In the background, one can see the iconic High Level Bridge, also completed in 1913. It once moved trains across the river. It is still used for car traffic. Each bridge runs one way to move traffic in and out of the Central Business District and joining the north and south sides of the city. Just beyond the black bridge, with the blue pedestrian walkway under it is the light rail transit (LRT) bridge that shuttles passenger trains across the river.
The domed building to the upper right is the Alberta Legislature building.
