Maybe his skin-suit and fish-leather shoes are better weather-proofed than our modern stuff- I've never felt so cold and miserable! Even our driver-guide who was born in the West fjords felt the cold;-) The wind comes straight from Greenland in this part of Iceland.

Danke, Iris! Ich bin mir nicht so sicher, ob alles heutige so viel besser ist. Diejenigen mit den angeblich wasserdichten Hosen mit der Tatze waren schon nach dem ersten halben Tag nass und sind es die ersten Tage auch geblieben;-) Meine billige Regen-Überhose war da besser, aber hier habe ich gefroren wie ein Schneider....

Thanks, Roar! Considering the Vikings came over from Norway more than 1000 years ago they have kept very similar traditions indeed! But then conditions in northern seas are similar too.

Danke, Dida! Als wir kamen, war er im Warmen und die Reste eines chinese takeaway standen auch noch rum. Wahrscheinlich wartete er drauf, die Reste in die Mikrowelle hauen zu können;-)) LG Gudrun

A great portrait. His oilskin clothing and woolen gloves would have handled the cold well, but of course the gloves would need waterproof outers. I'd think this would have been standard clothing until synthetics arrived about 50 years ago. It would have been hard and dangerous work fishing from the rowing boat though, no matter what the clothing.

Thanks, tiabunna! He didn't tell us anything about waterproof overgloves, but the knitted gloves have two thumbs so they could turn them over. This was one of the largest fishing stations, good fishing grounds but dangerous with some of the worst weather in Iceland.
They also got the worst of the current storm with wind gust up to 80 m/s.

Ich vermute, der hat wie wir gefroren, auch wenn er's nicht zugegeben hat.Unser guide hat jedenfalls hinterher im Bus die Heizung volle Kanne aufgedreht, was er sonst nie gemacht hat;-)

Wie man (z.B. unter dem Bild) einen Link anfügt, weiss ich. Aber kann man den nicht auch etwas "verkleiden" oder umschreiben, wie bei Pano? Bei sehr langen Links wird das sonst ziemlich unansehnlich.

Ja, das geht offenbar schon. Ich meine, Lutz hat mir das mal irgendwo geschrieben, aber ich find's nicht mehr....irgendwann geht mir schon noch ein Lichtlein auf;-)

I don't know how they did it without freezing to death! (Probably a lot of them did.)

I think genetic selection has been at work there, only the hardiest survived ever since Iceland was settled, the weaker ones probably died in infancy. Icelanders still are a hardy lot though modern living is starting to show...
