1964 Singer Gazelle series V, Jan. 1977
|
|
My father's second Singer Gazelle, owned by him from new, just before it was traded in. I have at some point dated the slide mounts "29/30 Jan. 1976" but I must have got the year wrong because the replacement car, bought new, was on an R plate, current from 1 August 1976 to 31 July 1977. When we first looked at the slides, my mother remarked, "what a smart looking car", but the corrosion was in fact quite bad and considerable effort had to be put into keeping it as smart as possible (assisted by my late grandfather's body repair business, which my father ran for a few years); my father also believed that a leak in one corner of the windscreen had corroded the bulkhead. It had done over 100,000 miles.

Cottages in Middle Street (formerly 3 and 5), converted to a single house, with modern extensions, seen from School Lane. The village has quite a lot of interesting modern building and conversion work, and there is also still a lot of open space in the centre of the village.

From SE. Dated 1563 internally, the older section being the surviving part of a larger house, but the two gables belong to late C17 extensions which, according to the Buildings of England , "may be the work of Dr Humphrey Gower, Master of St John's College Cambridge, who bequeathed the house to his college as vacation retreat for his successors". Frost-laden willow. The frost is considerably less heavy than in this shot , taken just outside the next village.

About 9.00 a.m. There had been no more snow since the previous day , but there had been a hard frost, by the standards of our part of the world.

Light snow from the previous night is overlying the previous weekend's heavier fall. Some of the footprints are from the local muntjac, which came into the garden at dusk a couple of nights before, although this seems to have been its only visit.
