Shows how small cars have grown in the last thirty years or so (although the Metro's tyres and suspension do need pumping up, and it is parked where the drive slopes down to a drain, which exaggerates the comparison a bit). The only things that haven't grown are the windows. The Metro's big glass area was actually trumpeted as a safety feature in early advertisements "(if you see better, you drive better)". I haven't noticed a manufacturer saying anything like that for quite some time!

From an album in which, sadly, only two pages have been filled; they both include photographs of Bispham so this may have been taken on the same holiday. However, the people are not the same as in the only seaside group ( www.flickr.com/photos/40878011@N07/7381490716/in/set-7215... ) and the man on the far right at the back is definitely a Lincoln friend of my grandparents (Jack Craft), so possibly this was taken on an outing from Lincoln. My mother (born 1919) is third from the right at the back with her mother (I'm fairly sure) in the centre; her father (who ran a garage business in Lincoln ) is seated, wearing the boater; probably her mother's unmarried sister, Charlotte (Lottie) , who lived with my grandparents, on the far left.

Obviously taken on the same occasion as www.flickr.com/photos/40878011@N07/7381491278/in/set-7215... and presumably taken by my maternal grandfather, since he is present in the other shot but missing from this one. My mother (born 1919) is on the far right with her mother, I believe, next to her.

My mother (born 1919) sitting on the sand; probably her mother behind her. I cannot confidently identify the others but the couple in the deckchairs to the left might be my mother's Aunt Ethel and her husband, who farmed at Orby in Lincolnshire. From an album in which, sadly, only two pages have been filled; they both include photographs of Bispham so I presume that this was taken on the same holiday.

The girls' entrance at the S. end of the original 1859 building. The "library" sign relates to the building's more recent use.

Wolseley 25 on the back of a playing card, c.1948?
|
|
From what I presume was a promotional pack of cards, although the advertising is subtle - this image appears on the back of each card and on the box but there is no wording. Found in the drawer of my grandparents' card table and presumably associated with my grandfather's garage business . Although he was never a Wolseley agent, handling Austins, Citroëns and Singers, he did (in a manner that I suppose would be impossible now) obtain cars of other makes for friends and acquaintances, and himself drove Rovers at least from the 1950s onwards, so perhaps the playing cards came his way as a result of purchasing a car for a friend, or maybe he even considered a Wolseley for himself. The date is a guess - the Wolseley 25 was introduced in 1936 as an up-market version of the equivalent 6-cylinder Morris and was relaunched after the war only briefly, but the pose here is very similar to an advert reproduced on the 1948 page of the Classic Car Catalogue , even though the art-work is not quite the same; the original oil painting is held by the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, which dates it to the 1940s.

The extension of the central heating system to the lock-up garages, which were available for rent, is particularly striking.
