Derby: Bridge Gate 2012-12-10

10 Dec 2012 107
The remaining fragment of Bridge Gate seen from the bridge over the ring road. On the left is the side elevation of St Helen's House in King Street, built 1766-7 for Alderman John Gisborne to the designs of Joseph Pickford [Maxwell Craven in Georgian Group Journal , XVII (2009), p.78; list description: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1228285 ]. To the right, 11 Bridge Gate (occupied by St Mary's Convent since 1862) is partly C19 with a C18 re-fronting of earlier (perhaps late C16) buildings on the right: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1215807 .

From E (liturgical S). Roman Catholic parish church built at the expense of the earl of Shrewsbury and designed by A. W. Pugin, 1838. This is as good a photograph as I could manage of the nave and aisles, which are rather more austerely treated than the tower , which faced Bridge Gate. On the site of the first silk mill in England, built in 1702, but rebuilt after a fire in 1826 and largely rebuilt after another fire in 1910. List description: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1287508 .

Former Midland Counties Railway workshop, seen from the steps of the station footbridge. 1839, with C19 and C20 alterations and additions. List description, list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1230740 , notes that this is "the earliest surviving railway works in the country".

Seen from the station platform (i.e. from W). The two wings embrace the locomotive roundhouse on its west side. List description, list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1228934 , says that the tower dates from c.1850 and was originally free standing; by 1883, according to OS maps, it was connected to the station by a footbridge which presumably accounts for the girder inserted in the arch, and the panel above it. The weather vane is in the form of Stephenson's Rocket - this can just be made out if the photo is viewed full size.

Midland Railway workers' housing off Railway Terrace, designed by Francis Thompson, 1842. The street behind runs at an angle so that, apparently, there is room only for a lobby behind the front door of the house that closes the cul de sac, but the bay window enables a reasonably sized room to be fitted in to the left. List description: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1272253 .

Derby: Midland Hotel 2012-12-10

10 Dec 2012 92
Designed by Francis Thompson and "the earliest surviving railway hotel built [in conjunction] with a station" according to The buildings of England: Derbyshire (2nd edn., corrected reprint, 1979), p.176, which dates the building to 1840, although the list description says 1842. The modern portico replaces a somewhat art deco entrance, shown in a photograph in Country Life , 8 Sept. 1983, p.630; an 1843 depiction of the station and hotel accompanying the same article suggests that there was originally no entrance on this side (which faces the station), accounting for the absence of any other central emphasis; it appears that the original entrance to the hotel was round the corner in Midland Road, between the two wings of the building.

From SE. The Strand, the curving street in the centre, was laid out in 1878, when the Markeaton Brook was culverted. The buildings in the Strand date from 1881; list description: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1279060 . The buildings on the left, on the corner of Wardwick and the Strand, date from c.1883: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1229611 . On the right is the former General Post Office of 1869: list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1279012 .

The town house of the Gells of Hopton Hall until c.1852, and probably built for Major Thomas Gell (1594-1657) [Maxwell Craven in Country Life (May 14, 1987), p.202].
