The bike at Kampong Trach.

The bike at Kampong Trach.
Cambodia.
After a miserable bus journey from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, I decided I needed to be in more control over my choice of destination and journey times.

A two week hire was perfect, and I set off to put as many miles on the clock as was possible.
Capable of 70mph on the open road, coupled with being unable to hire a helmet, it was great to have the wind in my hair. It meant I could go to places the buses couldn't.
I was free. I loved it.

I know what you mean George...I was in an RTA in a minibus in Vietnam, which resulted in a car-chase and a punch up. I'm not such a great passenger and prefer to be in control, however dangerous!

Oh, T...'course you're not past it. I have friends in their 70's that ride. You HAVE to have a go...book a beginners course for a hundred quid or so. There's nothing like it. I don't have a UK bike license but foreign police can't generally interpret the ins and outs of a UK license...besides, they have to catch me first. The freedom IS amazing, and the isolation can be a blessed relief, though in Asia, as soon as you stop, the isolation goes out the window, and you draw a crowd!

Next time take an EU or Australian standard helmet. The local ones can often be broken by hand. They help comply with the law but not with head protection according to My daughter who has lived there for more than a decade.
