Western Australia.

I suspect that most people don't realise just how large, empty and, most of all - dry, this place is! Were you out here with work or holidaying, Phil?

WA is reportedly 28 times the size of England, George, so quite spacy by our standards, and though I lived in Africa for a few years, even the Serengeti paled into the realms of a park compared to this. I was on holiday, and stopped off to see some friends in Perth enroute to NZ where I have family. I borrowed their spare car to have a long weekend away up at Shark Bay and carried on all the way to Kalumburu and back...about 10,000km and 8 weeks, lol. I then spent a further couple of months around Cairns and Daintree, then Sydney and Melbourne before eventually getting to Aukland to meet my family 5 months late. I loved it. They had assumed I'd died.

That sounds like a very extended weekend, Phill! I hope they weren't in a hurry to get their spare car back. :)) Glad that you managed to see so much of our country while you were here - I've yet to cover the northwest myself!

Bev, it's Gods country. No-one could not like it, unless addicted to City life. I could bore you to tears with hours of video and endless tales...I caught my hair on fire, and got swept away in a little boat...just for starters, lol. Will add to groups when I have time...only in from work 40 mins ago. :-)

I was luck enough to visit Australia a couple of times whilst in the RN and I was amazed at how long it took to fly over it - this lovely photo really gives us an idea of how vast and empty much of Australia is. Very well done mate :)

Thanks mate. I paid 70 bucks to the local Post Office way up in the far north of WA to join the weekly post round (in a Cessna) to some far reaching Aboriginal communities and cattle stations, landing on mud airstrips way out in the bush, that you'd never get to in a 4x4. Took 9 hours to do the round. The best 30 quid I ever spent in my life.

I was also amazed at the huge expanse of nothing when I flew over Australia some years ago. This shot captures that vastness so well.
