I love their smiles. I wonder if they're using the bottles as props to pose for a funny picture.

This photo is very funny. I think people did not really drink wine in the bottle, and it was only for photography. But I can show you photos of France, in the 1930s, where people, in the photo, had obviously abused wine!

Alan and Nautilus - You might be right - a posed, funny picture had never occurred to me, but this family certainly had other photos that were clearly meant as a joke!
I actually always assumed it was the grandma's home brewed ginger beer bottles and they'd broken theme open for the first time.
We'll never know. : )
