This is the Gilpin Falls Covered Bridge. It is one of only two covered bridges remaining in Cecil County, Maryland. It literally is "the bridge to nowhere" as it doesn't carry traffic anymore. It basically crosses a stream and that is it.

There was quite a bit of controversy a few years ago over whether to demolish or restore this bridge when it was discovered to be structurally unsound after several years of deterioration. Over a million dollars would be needed to fund restoration. A small group of proponents for preservation tried to privately raise all funds, but could not do it in time. They appealed to local county government to fund the balance, but many taxpayers complained, citing several other bridges in active use by citizens in dire need of repair that were being put on hold for lack of funding. In the end, the restoration was funded through a combination of private donations and money from the State of Maryland set aside for historic preservation.

I travel past this landmark on a regular basis, so I don't usually think much of it as I speed by. However, the photo above reminds me that it really isn't so ordinary after all.

Other than very minor adjustments with contrast and rotation, this image is otherwise unprocessed. For a more "artistically" bucholic image of the bridge, check out the photo I took a few weeks ago in the note.

...well done Val and thanks for the interesting information. Same problem here, we dont plan for maintenance on our bridges, we just "consume them". Have a nice Sunday!

I tell ya Val you are such a wordsmith I swear I learn at least one new word from you each week!

We don't have these beautiful covered bridges here or at least if we do, I don't ever see them. Nice shot for the challenge. The one in your notes is so pretty.

Oh my goodness, thanks so much! I certainly don't think of myself as a "wordsmith". I just read a lot of descriptive novels, I guess, lol!

I think these bridges were more common in the rural areas of the East and Midwest sections of the US, though I'm not sure. They may have had them all over the country. Glad you like my photos, Karen :-))

But you were in Maryland ....

Ah, yes, that movie had a gorgeous covered bridge in it! These covered bridges are located in various rural parts of the country. They are not very common anymore. Thanks for the fave, Heidi :-))

Nice bridge. It's good to see some things are preserved for future generations, although is sometimes a financial battle to do that.

Thank you, Diederik. Yes, it is always a financial "tug of war" to fund preservation and restoration of historic objects.

Great shot and a fascinating story Val. As for checking out the more "artistically" bucholic image in the Notes you can forget that ... I'm off to get a dictionary first! ;)

I'm just fascinated by these covered bridges - we don't have anything like that over here in the UK

It seems covered bridges are indigenous to the USA. I had always assumed that UK and Europe would have these structures, too, but I guess I'm wrong!

Oh it's always a treat to see these covered bridges ... good to see another one preserved. They always tend to take one back to an earlier less hectic time. I hope folks continue to save the ones they can. It would be a pity to see them gone. I really like the one you caught on the fly and of course the one in the note box is just a beauty. Well done Val. :)

Thank you so very much, Chris! I'm glad you enjoyed viewing this image, and for the fave. I agree, it is wonderful when these structures can be preserved. Just over the border in Pennsylvania, there is a covered bridge in active use. A few years ago the bridge needed to be repaired; when I saw them take the structure down, I was afraid it would be replaced by a conventional bridge. Imagine my relief to see that they were merely renovating, not eliminating the covered bridge! It is now back in use, fully renovated. I love to drive over there just to pass through it, lol!
