Am I being watched? HFF!

Am I being watched? HFF!
A young sparrow takes advantage of our home-made bird feeder hanging from a tree branch outside a window. Hidden by the blinds, I was able to take this close up without scaring it off, but the camera's clicking sound still made it a bit wary.

The feeder has had to be "fenced" to prevent pigeons from raiding it and leaving nothing for the smaller birds. In fact, it took three successive adaptations to finally succeed in foiling the clever strategies that one particular pigeon (which my husband nicknamed "the Engineer") kept coming up with to get to the food despite the protective net: for example, he would use his body weight to weigh down one side, causing the grains and seed to slide to the edge, where he could pick them out by craning his neck in through the net, all while hanging on to the rim with his feet and keeping himself airborne by fluttering his wings... I think my husband was half entertained half ticked off to be twice outsmarted by this clever fellow :D The third design, however, finally worked out. The Engineer still studied it for a while, tried various approaches, but eventually admitted defeat and went looking for more accessible food sources.

HFF everyone! May you outsmart any form of pervicacious "engineers" out there that may be barring your way to an enjoyable weekend!

Yes, pigeons are a big problem in many cities. As a result of the wrong (and too much) feeding by humans, they are often also carriers of diseases.
But your capture is cute! :-)
HFF and have a nice weekend!

Thank you, Poly. I feel sorry for the poor pigeons actually, but if we fed them they would come in droves and overtake the garden, not to mention that the neighbors would not be pleased ...

Like I told Poly, the problem with pigeons is that in a city environment there are so many, they would overrun us. :))

Yes, I saw that in a picture you posted, Karl. Still, I cannot imagine woodpeckers being as numerous as pigeons are in the city. Considering that they must make do with the few crumbs that the other birds scatter outside the feeder we still have a troop of about 5 or 6 that lounge around in the garden. If they had easy access to food, they would overrun us!

Thank you for visiting, Karl!

HFF - bird feeders can be raided by any ingenious creature. It is squirrels that are my problem, but I like them, so I forgive them. Their babies are out now - so cute.

Annalia S. club has replied to GoSloMo
I don't actually dislike pigeons and feel it's not really nice to discriminate against them. But, unfortunately, we live in the city and there are so many of them that if we provided an accessible food source they would overrun the garden (and we would have a big problem with the neighbors, too ...)
I can imagine just how cute the baby squirrels are!

He's nice. I have just been watching our sparrows taking a bath in our bird bath and another taking away dropped feathers, presumably to a new nest nearby our house.

We have both pigeons and collar-doves trying to capture our bird food that is hanging from a pole-feeder. They have resorted to simply walking in circles around the foot of the pole, their circular walks are shared by our blackbirds and squirrels. They regularly make a distinctive worn path around the pole which we must re-locate regularly :)

Well done for your shot here and most interesting story Judite.

HFF, have a great week. Herb

Thank you, Herb. here too the pigeons hover around, trying to pick up the seeds the other birds drop. :)
You mixed me up with Judite, but I will take that as a compliment because I really like her photography and her sensitivity :)))

A delightful picture Annalia. Last year we did not have many sparrows visit the garden, but they have made up for it this years....they make a beautiful noise in the hedges! We have two blackbirds that come to the door to remind us that they need feeding and I give up with the pigeons...we feed them as well ;-)) HFF and wish you a good weekend.
Annalia S. club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne
Unfortunately we live in the city and feeding the pigeons is just not an option: too many of them! They would come in droves, overcome the garden and the neighbors would not like me at all ...
We also have a lady blackbird that comes to get my attention when she needs the bird feed replenished. She waits on a nearby tree and as soon as I am done proceeds to fill up her beak and flies off to feed the little ones!
Hope you are enjoying the weekend and taking more pictures af the beautiful sites you have been regaling us with! :)

Annalia S. club has replied to Jocelyne Villoing club
Thank you, Jocelyne. The size of the net was chosen to allow the little birds - we have tits, black caps, robins, sparrows and black birds visiting the garden - to come and go easily while keeping the pigeons from polishing off everything before the others had a chance to eat.
Hope you are enjoying your Sunday!

A beautiful image Annalia and I loved your story. Pigeons are very clever birds - I have seen them try to land on the tiniest of feeders and swing them to get the seed out. We had a pretty clever magpie who managed to unhook a fat ball and tried to fly off with the whole thing! They are really amusing to watch though.

HFF and have a good weekend
Annalia S. club has replied to Ecobird club
They certainly are, Carol. I have developed a keener interest in bird behaviour ever since the first lockdown when, for two months, they were basically the only creatures from the outside world we saw. Now I know just how wrong we are in not giving them credit for a high degree of intelligence and sensitivity. The blackbirds know my husband well, since he's the one who feeds them mostly, but somehow they also know that in his absence they can apply to me for a replenishment when the bird feeder is empty and, after some trial and error, I have learned to recognize their attempts at communication (the lady blackbird will come up to me very close and just stare at me. If I fail to respond, she will fly to the empty feeder and look at me, then come back and stand in my way until I pay attention).
And the pigeons are definitely not the uninteresting, clumsy, dull birds that most people seem to consider them. It's a pity we cannot afford to be generous to them too. In a city environment there are just too many of them and feeding them would produce a revolt among the neighbors ...
Hope you are enjoying your Sunday!

Belated HFF Annalia…and a cautionary tale! We have all encountered ‘engineers’ in our lives and had to find ways to manage them. Well done to your husband for his persistence. It is a lovely photo, especially with the back story! Have an enjoyable new week.
Annalia S. club has replied to Diana Australis club
Thank you, Diana. I met just such an "engineer" recently and needed as much persistence as my husband did with our winged visitor. Sadly, though she works for the government (while I work for a non-profit) and gets paid three times as much as I do, she didn't display half the native intelligence and didn't work half as diligently as our pigeon "Engineer" ... It took months for my persistence to finally pay off! :D
Have a great week ahead yourself!
