Is it a lion ?... or could be a bear... but anyway - both species go ''Grrrrrr'' Only at certain times during the day - can this rocky feature be clearly picked out - obviously due to the position of the sun at the time of capture. With a crate of beer and a bottle of wine.. I waited 4 hours -. took the snap.. then fell into the sea.

The Monsal trail.. old railway from Buxton to Manc…

An inside shot..of the longest of 8 tunnels of the popular 'Monsal trail' along the 'Wye valley' - Derbyshire. During the days of regular use - twin rail tracks ran here and the shallow openings within each side - are refuges where any workers could take shelter from the rumbling fire breathing iron monsters as they hurtled along. A varied assortment of brickwork lines the tunnels and it is fascinating to think back to the times of the 1860s and the skills of the tunnellers when this rail line was constructed through this beautiful valley.

Here we are on the 'Monsal trail' popular with walkers - cyclists and once a rail route. / May 1863 saw the opening of a section of railway, eventually forming part of a main line between London and Manchester. It cut a route through the beautiful Wye Valley in Derbyshire and needing eight tunnels - two major viaducts and a number of smaller ones in the space of just 11 miles. All the tunnels are lit - and seen ahead here is the longest - Headstone - at 533 yards. This approach cutting has near-vertical sides and some outcrops have been supported with masonry or brick pillars.

Tree leaf cover now obscures most of Chesterfield Parish Church - here is a limited view of the famous 'crooked spire'. It is an Anglican church located in the town of Chesterfield - Derbyshire. Dating back to the 14th century, is widely known for its twisted and leaning spire, but hardly noticed by us locals. It is now believed that the twisting action was caused by the lead that covers the spire. The heat from the sun on the south side of the tower causes the lead there to expand at a greater rate than that of the north side of the tower, resulting in unequal expansion and contraction.

Another view of the famous crooked spire...St.Mary and all Saints Anglican church... Chesterfield Derbyshire - UK. It is an amazing fact that the spire is not fixed onto the stone square tower.. and remains standing purely by it's own weight.

A most scenic footpath alongside the river 'Wye'... which meanders its way... below the well used and popular 'Monsal Trail' a cycling, horse riding and walking trail in the Derbyshire Peak District. It was constructed from a section of the former Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midlands Junction Railway, built by the Midland Railway in 1863 to link Manchester with London, the line closed in 1968.

Looking back towards 'Longstone edge' - here is a Bridleway leading over open countryside from 'The Monsal trail' to the town of 'Bakewell' Derbyshire. An unknown couple stroll along.. and in the field to the right - is a huge bull...which we passed by earlier.

Bolsover castle.... the 'Star chamber'

Large parts of this castle are ruined and open to the sky.. but surprisingly - here - the tower know as 'the little castle' is complete and re furnished - here is the 'Star chamber' named after the ceiling plaster decor and featuring many stars. This grandest of rooms is where 'William Cavendish' would receive guests to dine and be entertained. The castle itself was designed for elegant living rather than defence.

Due to a constant stream of parked cars.. it is virtually impossible to photograph this well known shop and cafe'..when free of any vehicles. Snapped here.. at 18.47 hrs. on a weekday is one of the rare occasions when the famous shop can 'almost' be fully seen.. The sign to the left reads... ''The original Bakewell pudding sold here since 1865''

Seen peeking above the trees.. the two 'Hardwick homes' of 'Bess Countess of Hardwick'. She began to build 'The Old Hall' seen to the right in 1587. Although the Old Hall is a ruin and open to the elements, some of the original plaster work on the walls are still in place. In 1590, before the Old Hall was complete, Bess started to build another house immediately beside it – the New Hall – completed in 1597 .. it is very complete with furnishings and open to visitors.

Recently finished office buildings of various uses - here in the centre of Sheffield. To leap over the fence to the right.. would result in a 10 metre plummet into the river 'Sheaf' which runs beneath the city mainly unseen - but makes a rare and short appearance here. The city derives it's name from the river 'Sheaf' and field.

Cheedale...... and the 'River Wye'

Stepping stones through the 'River Wye'...is the only way to go.. at this point. 'Chee Dale'.. is a picturesque beauty spot in the Peak District, whose limestone crags are popular with climbers. There’s a former railway line criss crossing the valley along parts that’s now been converted into the 'Monsal Trail' - a popular pathway which includes passage through the old railway tunnels.. now surfaced and illuminated.
