The Chesterfield canal 'company'..was one of the earliest to be completed in Britain..formed by local people in 1771 at the start of the industrial revolution. The canal was built to give land locked Derbyshire an outlet to the river 'Trent' - a great highway for both inland boats and coastal craft from the North sea.
Today .. the maintained tow path is still open and is very popular with walkers - cyclists.

'Willy Lotts' cottage.. the house featured in 'John Constables' world renowned painting .. ''The Hay wain'' - occupied by a tenant farmer, who was said to have been born in the house and never to have left it for more than four days in his lifetime. The cottage has survived to this day practically unaltered.
Although.. as at September 2018.. the property is not lived in and the interior is mainly derelict.

A view of the rugged valley of 'Cavedale' which leads down to the old village of 'Castleton' in Derbyshire..The ruins of the 11th. century Peveril Castle is seen to the left. It was the main settlement of the feudal barony of William Peverel, and was founded some time between the Norman Conquest of 1066 and its first recorded mention in the Domesday Survey of 1086... The Beatles bronze statues at the pier head on Liverpools' docks. Each figure carries discreet details.... Pauls camera is probably due to his association with Linda Eastman .. an 'L8' on the bottom of Ringo's shoe denotes 'his home post code' and acorns in John's right hand, to promote peace and said were cast from the ones that were picked up outside the Dakota building in New York. The back of George's belt shows 'Sanskrit' lettering one of the 22 official languages of India.
Each figure is approx 8 feet tall... 2.4 metres.

Here we are at the peak of 'Mam tor' at 517 m (1,696 ft) near Castleton in the High Peak of Derbyshire. Its name means Mother hill, so called because frequent landslips on its eastern face have resulted in a multitude of mini-hills beneath it. In 1979, the continual battle to maintain the A625 road ..Sheffield to Chapel en le Frith.. on the crumbling eastern side of the hill was lost when the road officially closed as a through-route. Traffic now has to use the narrow and beautiful 'Winnats pass' to travel west out of the 'Hope valley'.
Nostell Priory...1733 .. for the 'Winn' family
|
|
|
|
The house was built during 1733 by 21 year old James Paine for Sir Rowland Winn. The damaged brickwork seen to the left column of the six.. was due to a fire in 1980 which raged out of the downstairs windows.. believed started by a faulty television and totally destroyed 'the breakfast room' and the 'Crimson room'. They were restored to new by following James Paines original drawings.
Nostell Priory is home to a large collection of Chippendale furniture, and other furnishings all made for the house and remain in situ today.
