Ladybower dam .. the East overflow.. 'plughole'

13 Nov 2019 19 19 270
Recent heavy rains have ensured that reservoirs are full to overflowing.. here at 'Ladybower' near Sheffield two overflows were built instead of a retaining dam wall. The water plummets 20 metres down these shafts and along concrete lined tunnels - large enough to drive a bus through.. and into the river Derwent below.

Recent heavy rains have ensured that reservoirs are full to overflowing.. here at 'Ladybower' near Sheffield two overflows were built instead of a retaining dam wall. The water plummets 20 metres down these shafts and along smooth concrete lined tunnels big enough to drive a bus through...and into the river Derwent below.

Pictured from the East bank of Ladybower dam.. and appearing to look like a line of goods rail trucks crossing a bridge.... this is actually the 'pipe bridge' which carries water from the 'Derwent' and 'Howden' dams to be filtered and treated for use in other cities including Nottingham and Leicester.. up to 60 miles south of these dams. ''HFF'' and 'Good wishes' .. to all .. from David J'..... Technical note... it is possible to set the A7r to 'Apsc.' mode giving a more versatile use to any lens and giving a 'crop' mode to all focal lengths...of whichever lens is in use.. very useful.

Ladybower dam.. from a distance... and No. '33'

Seen during a walk along 'Stanage edge' are numerous of these man made grooves and bowls cut into the rocks...here is number '33'....but what are they ? After doing some looking around on the 'Net'... I discovered that they are provided as a source of drinking water for the 'Grouse' ... this is when the land was privately owned .. around 100 years ago and supplied for the poor Grouse which were specifically reared to be shot.. by the wealthy land owners and their pals !

The paving .... of Portugal...

Around Madeira and here.. in Portugal are what must be literally billions !! of these individual paving bricks... and whole roadways sometimes consist of them. I once did a movie of the skilled ''calceteiros'' tapping each one singly into the wet mortar by hand. The pattern seen here - where the black tiles meet the white - forms an illusion where the ground appears to form a 'hump' in the centre - when in actual fact the pavement here... is perfectly flat.

The railway station... Monte Gordo.. Portugal.

15 Oct 2019 7 10 221
Taking a nosy around.. as I was..a lone figure wanders the platform of the seemingly unused 'Monte Gordo' rail station.. but it is far from unused. The office - toilets and waiting rooms are long closed and sealed up.. but a timetable is in place and passengers regularly arrive to travel along the single rail which runs from the town of 'Villa Real de Santa Antonio' in the East - all the way - via Faro - to 'Lagos' the most Western stopping point...a total of 135 km - 86.7 miles. We used the train service ourselves.. going from 'Monte Gordo' to 'Tavira' .. a most comfortable journey of around 35 minutes.

A modified 'Honda' air cooled - 4 cylinder - with unfiltered carbs - at our local 'Eckington motor cycle show'. Tech. notes.. the 16mm apsc lens used here was fitted with the Sony wide angle converter, made specifically for the F2.8 which has a focal-length reduction factor of 0.75×, the resultant actual focal length is 12mm, equivalent to an 18mm lens - on a 35mm-format camera.

Stanage Edge, or simply Stanage (from "stone edge") is a gritstone escarpment in the Peak District. The northern part of the edge forms the border between the High Peak of Derbyshire and Sheffield in South Yorkshire. Its highest point is High Neb at 458 metres (1,503 ft) above sea level. Areas of Stanage were quarried in the past to produce grindstones, and some can still be seen on the hillside—carved, but never removed... 'Wiki'. ... Beautiful walking for as far as legs can carry you..... ''Have a 'Happy fence Friday' ... from Dj.
