On the horizon are the Greece islands, I guess. So there was a rivalry between those neighbors already in the past - with regard to the fortress in the the picture!?

You are right about the rivalry between Greece and Turkey, and in places the Greek islands are very close indeed. In this case the mountains in the background are part of Turkey. The island of Samos (which I guess you are thinking of) is off to the left out of shot.
