Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon
Almost our last stop before heading home was the Grand Canyon. We only saw the South Rim of the Canyon. The north rim was still closed for the winter. At 7000 feet (2100 m) elevation it was still winter at the canyon, very cold and snow still on the ground. In spite of that it was very busy. This photo was taken from the Hermit's Point Road on the west side of the south rim, a road that tomorrow will be closed to cars. It was taken at one of the viewpoints along the road at a spot known as The Abyss and shows the Colorado River at the bottom of the canyon on the right. I had not seen the canyon since I was 13 years old and my wife had never seen it, so it was great to have been there, though our stay was only two days and two nights.

Nouchetdu38, Gabriella Siglinde, Nora Caracci, Daniel Palacin and 29 other people have particularly liked this photo

What a view!! This panorama is such a great way to look at this crazy canyon which seems to go on without end. The layers upon layers of visible millenia are astonishing. I must admit that when I saw this as a 19-yr old with the Green Tortoise tour I went on, I was not at all as impressed as I should have been. I remember at the time being surprised at how "meh" it seemed in comparison to what I thought I'd feel. Even though I understood the majesty and incredulousness of it all--to understand that the GC can be seen from SPACE...WOW! And STILL...I didn't think it was all that. But what I WAS impressed with, was investigating the crunching sound under my feet. To crouch down and see, with a dropping jaw of recognition, a layer of seashells EVERYWHERE... now THAT made me fall over in total amazement and reverence. To see countless ancient shells really hit it out of the ballpark for me and I understood what a blip in time we silly humans really are. It is profound to stand at the edge of the Grand Canyon and muse over the whole thing, isn't it? No matter what a person's beliefs are, it is a truly wondrous thing to consider it all while looking out on that endless expanse of canyon. So...though for me the view wasn't all that big a deal (though it ought to have been), I certainly got a whallup of amazement in the end! Can't WAIT to share that place with Steve and revisit with more understanding of the grandeur of the Grand Canyon! :)

You spent two DAYS there? You LUCKY STINKER!! :) Can't wait to see your photos...I would dearly LOVE to have that much time to wander around with my camera...:) Glad you got to be there for that long! :)

And now, to reply to the lovely post you left for me yesterday! :)

Yay, you liked the pictures of Little Qualicum Falls! It's fun to wonder how you'll like a presentation and you always enjoy my offerings, making me feel all wiggly and happy about my choices too! :) You guys would love that place...what a stunner of a place to visit. And glad you enjoyed the wide bridge pano--it's really a lot of fun to use the pano feature of my phone camera because it does such a nice job! The results can be really interesting, like that bridge shot...and I was surprised to learn that if I upload a pano image to Facebook, it will work like a 360 degree view when you look at the image, allowing you to use your mouse to slowly turn around as far as the image goes. It's super cool and I really wish that ipernity had this pano feature built into it like FB does. I very rarely use FB so the true pano aspect of my images is wasted but the wide images I get to share are such fun! I wasn't sure if folks would like them or not but apparently they are well-received which makes me very happy! There's something so immersive about a wide pano when seen large. It really puts you into the scene. Maybe you could consider uploading larger images of your panos? I'd love to see them!

Glad you liked my garter snake picture--I'm just happy I was able to use it at all! I'd set my ISO to auto and it was quite dim in the understory there so when I saw the pictures I was horrified at the grain! Almost but not quite unusable...I wanted so badly to share my little buddy with the world that I thought maybe if I just showed an inset and carefully worked to reduce the grain, that perhaps it would turn out ok. In the end I'm delighted that it looks fine--and the feather in my cap is that you and others have made a point to mention that picture! Hooray! I tell you, fighting with ISO can be such a bear, can't it? The smaller the subject, the less leeway you have on that one too. By the way...we sure did see lots of snakes and lizards on VI! What a treat!

I am happy to read that your trail meals turned out so well! That's wonderful--saved a lot of money doing it that way and so much tastier too. As you said though--dehydrated food just can't beat a home-cooked meal and I guess after all those freeze-dried meals you certainly would be very happy to be making your culinary masterpieces at home again! :) You should feel extremely proud of yourself, however, for providing so many fine weight/space-conserving meals for your trip (and trips in the future too!)

The puck machines we got were table-top units but a lot smaller than a proper espresso machine. The one you linked to is awfully cute! But not similar to the two or three versions Steve tried out. I seem to recall they were in the $100+ range, and every one of them was garbage. Not just the quality of the coffee but the manufacture of the machines and how poorly they worked. Just glad we could return them...total and utter junk. Cannot understand how they get such high reviews...well, ok, I do know...paid reviewers is how it's done and a disgusting thing that is.

Meh on the bad timing for backpacking...but then again, what are you going to do with such volatile weather systems? Who knows how things will be from day to day. Where we live, the crazy, unpredictable weather lasts for months and you really can't depend on weather reports for anything more than a general idea. Still, though you didn't get any backpacking in, the good news is that you DID get lots of fun hikes in and you got to use your kayak too! HOORAY!

How did you end up liking the kayak? If you've used it for 15 miles (is that right?), you certainly got the hang of it! :) What a nice option that you were able to put into effect! :)

Steve beamed and snickered when I told him you referred to him as the resident genius, though he humbly said that he didn't think he did anything all that special. It's funny...I agree with you, he's amazing! But he is always thinking about that sort of thing so he doesn't realize how clever he truly is. I sure do enjoy reaping the rewards though! :)

The weather is miserable today so it will be another day or two before my bed's finished...stain doesn't dry in cold temperatures, so we'll just need to wait.

However, that lets him work on the electronics cabinet, which he's so excited about! Yesterday he had me come over to see his life-sized drawing of the cabinet and shelf that will go into place. It's going to be really neat and tidy, and will include a trough in the rear of the cabinet where all of the cords will go so they won't be everywhere--don't you just hate that mess? Makes us crazy and especially Steve. Along the back wall of the cabinet will be a 45" power strip that has plugs every 5" or so--instead of uselessly right next to each other--and he's figured out what will go where so there will be plenty of room for the camera chargers, the walkie-talkie chargers, the battery chargers, and all of the other power blocks and doo-dads that will go in there. There will be lots of high-speed USB ports too to charge phones, ipods and the like. The doors on the front will be the sliding type and the entire cabinet will be stained to match--or go with nicely--the surrounding cabinetry. It's going to be awesome! :)

LOL I giggled riotously when you said, If I was on my own I probably wouldn't even eat and would starve to death instead... LOL, you and Steve are pretty much in the same boat. He rolls around purring when I compliment his masterful culinary skills and naturally it would be the same if I were sitting at your table! :) You boys are amazing with food!! And I am very happy to clean up after with much thanks and appreciation!! :) <3

So after my eyes crossed writing to you, I opened up my copy of Mistress Masham's Repose but literally could not read more than a sentence before I had to go to sleep. I'm going to begin that today! Yay! By the way, I have a OneNote page dedicated to your book recommendations and have gathered every book in ebook form to enjoy when I can!

Ok, I'm out! Have a lovely day, Ron! :)

I would love to go back for a visit. We went in November and the temperature ranged from 4 degrees to 45 degrees on the South Rim. We went for a sunrise walk and had the place to ourselves (and the deer) for awhile.
