El Capitan

We are home again as of 5:00 am today and it is good to be back. We drove all day yesterday and through the night from Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona with only brief stops for petrol, food and one short hike to Horseshoe Bend in northern Arizona near the town of Page.
We drove over 5000 miles (8100 km), visited six national parks or monuments and several other locations besides, hiked around 60 miles (97 km) of trails, biked 20 miles (32 km) in San Antonio, Texas, and kayaked 10 miles (16 km) in Big Bend National Park.
This photo was taken in Guadalupe Mountains National Park on the Texas-New Mexico border and is a photo of the most dramatic, though not the highest of the peaks, El Capitan, visible for many miles from the surrounding deserts. It is 8085 feet (2464 meters).
We spent two days in the park camping and hiking. When we arrived El Capitan was hidden in the clouds but appeared the second day in all its dramatic beauty. We had only a short stop on our way to Grand Canyon, but now want to go back againand do more hiking.
The Guadalupe Mountains extend into New Mexico just south of Carlsbad Caverns and both can easily be visited at the same time, though hiking the park, a necessity, requires more time. They are considered to be the remains of an ancient reef as are other nearby areas.

*falls over, floats away*
Ron!!! That is so gorgeous I don't have the words!! What a sight! What incredible rock pinnacles against that radiant sky...*falls over again* You should print that out large enough to fill a wall...it's just WOW!!!! Gotta put that on our Bucket List! :D What a WINNER!! I love that you were surprised by how impressive this place was vs what you expected. We've found that to be the case many times too...it's always extra special when this happens. :) Also, what fine luck that the clouds left in time for this magnificent view and picture. YAY!
Next: WELCOME HOME!!! *runs...leaps...and LANDS ON YOU for a great big hug!* Oops, perhaps I was a BIT boisterous! :D *offers a hand to help you up, sheepishly wipes off the dust and leaves all over you...* Heh...not my fault! I missed you! :D
I'm so glad you guys had SUCH a SUCCESSFUL, FUN TRIP!!! WOWZERS...5k miles?!!!! ZOWIE!!! That's awesome!! And you hiked and biked and kayaked too! (you'd initially mentioned plans for backpacking...weather didn't cooperate for that?) You guys did STUFF!!! I look forward to the rollout of pictures over the next many weeks! :)
Now, to reply to your notes on my pictures! :)
Oh my...you arrived home at 5am?? That sort of driving is just so miserable when you're so TIRED! Wow...Mr. And Mrs. Persistent! :D It must have been ohhhh so nice to drag your weary souls through the front door and face-first into bed. Say hello to the Zombie Twins! :D
I'm going to bet you just LOVED that lovely cup of coffee! :) That's one thing we wouldn't leave at home on our travels (as you know!). Steve tried out a puck machine, small and portable, but they produce absolute garbage unless you're willing to literally spend over a dollar per puck...I don't THINK SO. He wanted so badly for it to work out, he bought a bunch of different brands of affordable types but every one was watery garbage without any caffeine kick that espresso fiends insist on. He kept trying to make me believe they were great but finally admitted that I was right in my assessment (and refusal to drink them after a few horrible cups) and we ended up buying another espresso machine just for the trailer so we don't have to lug the monster back and forth every trip. (of all the luck, we found the very type we use at a 2nd-hand store for $95 dollars instead of the $250 it costs new...and it was in perfect condition!! SCORE!!!)
So who of you unpacks the car? Steve can't deal with unpacking right off the bat, and then he just forgets about it...but no matter because I MUST unpack as part of my "moving back in" ritual. Steve's all, "Just leave it until tomorrow!" But I can't stand the mess and I can't relax until everything is unpacked, put away and all is neat and tidy again! :)
Sorry to hear you had more car trouble. That's a bummer. But at least you got home ok. Let's hope the repairs aren't too dear and take care of your issues for a long time!
Oh! Thank you for your lavish praise of my pictures! :) You make me glow! :) Also, I wasn't surprised that we see eye to eye on that picture of the trees as my main picture...I kept stopping to look at it when assessing the group I would put up and as much as I loved the waterfall picture, the mossy trees really stand out...by the way, your picture here...it's just sitting in my mind, clear as a bell...what a memorable place!!!
It's too bad you didn't get to Arches or Zion but when you're done, you're done. The effort to make it to those places would be totally wasted, so got sometime when you're making it your destination!
Things are going great around here! Steve's finally got the hang of staining and the confidence boost is fun to see--he's looking forward to staining the wood for the electronics cabinet he'll be building after my bed drawers are finished. They are nearly done now! He's gluing and bradding the stained faces now, one drawer left to go! It's just so amazing, Ron. He's built a new bed frame for my little room, and now he's almost done with three large, custom-made drawers which go into it! How lucky am I?! :) One of the things that makes him happiest is that it's something he's making for me and he loves how happy I am with every step! :)
Oh! I finished The Pushcart War! What a cool book. Very interesting that this book, meant for the younger set, is about adult themes! Kids played a part but they weren't the main characters. I loved all the different names for everyone (HARRY THE HOTDOG, ROFLMAO!) and their hilarious schemes. I also enjoyed the obvious New York Jewish lingo throughout, which I heard so clearly as I read the conversations going on--and yet, this book is 100% secular, such an interesting combination!). I was surprised that there were some really dark plots and mob aspects to both sides and in the end...someone actually disappeared...presumably killed...which you wouldn't think would be in a book for kids. Anyway, I really loved thinking about the concepts raised in this book and thinking about what is right and fair, and how people should treat one another. Also, I ADORED the artwork!! SO NEAT! Additionally, I read (professional) reviews of this book which were quite deep with a lot of points I didn't think about (for instance, people say they loved this book as a kid BECAUSE of the adult themes)...and it was also interesting to learn that whenever this book is republished, it's always set about 20 yrs in the future! (If you are interested: www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/pushcart-wars-enduring-appeal ) I also found a great study guide which really make you think about the story and what it means (again, if you care: www.behrmanhouse.com/download/file/fid/5018 )
LOL, as you can see, I can go all-out when I read a book, heh! :) Thanks for the suggestion, I loved it!
Ok, I am calling it quits on this book! Have a lovely rest of your night if you're not already in Z land! :D
Hope all the family is happy and now you will take a well deserved break .
Cheers Ron.
Have a nice weekend Ron.
