Obsidian Flow

These will be the last photos I post of our Oregon-California trip. They are of the last place we visited before heading home, the obsidian flow at Newberry Volcanic Monument in Oregon. This flow is relatively recent, only about 1300 years ago and is spectacular with obsidian everywhere including massive blocks. It was tempting to pocket a few pieces but there are draconian fines for doing so and getting caught. For those who do not know, obsidian is black (usually) volcanic glass, some of which is more visible in the inset photos than that on the slope in the right of this photo. There are trails through the flow and it was one of favorite places at Newberry.

Obsidian Boulder

This is a boulder made almost entirely of obsidian and photographed at the obsidian flow in Newberry National Volcanic Monument in Oregon. What looks a bit like coal glinting in the light is actually the volcanic glass, obsidian.

This is a close-up of an obsidian boulder at Newberry National Volcanic Monument in Oregon. It is in an area covered with obsidian formed by a flow that is estimated to have taken place about 1300 years ago.

Obsidian and Snow

There was still snow at these elevations when we visited the obsidian flow in Newberry National Volcanic Monument in Oregon. These are pieces of the black volcanic glass known as obsidian, acres of which cover the ground in this area.

Lava Lands

While at Lava Lands in Newberry Volcanic Monument we walked the trails near the visitors' center. There is almost no vegetation in some areas while other areas have considerably more. This is the view to the northwest over the main lava flow. I am not sure but believe the volcanic peak in the distance is Mount Jefferson.

The lava in which this Sulfur Buckwheat is growing is clearly seen in the photo, taken at Lava Butte in Newberry National Volcanic Monument in Oregon.

Lava Butte Fire Lookout

These photos are all from our hike up Lava Butte, an old cinder cone in Lava Lands, and part of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The fire lookout at the top of the cone was manned and not open to the public. It was the stopping point for the shuttle bus that ran up from the visitors' center and most of those who used the shuttle rode up and rode back down. We walked around the rim of the cone before going back down and it was from the opposite side of the cone that this photo was taken.

Dead Tree

This tree, clinging to the rim of the cinder cone at Lava Lands had given up its struggle for existence, but had persevered long enough to became a mature tree.

Rydberg's Penstemon

We saw quite a few wildflowers at Lava Lands in Oregon including this Penstemon which I've identified as Rydberg's Penstemon, photographed on our hike up Lava Butte, an old cinder cone.
