Bambugh’s Arthurian castle

Bambugh’s Arthurian castle
A traditional view of this famous Northumbrian castle from the north seaward side. One can easily imagine knights practicing their swordsmanship in the high grounds or even jousting here on the sands. With a little more imagination, a dragon might be seen circling above too.

Described In medieval text as Lancelot’s Joyeus Garde Castle in the Arthurian tradition. Once the ancient capital of the powerful kingdom of Northumbria. There has been some kind of defensive structure at Bamburgh since at least the 6th century after constant Viking invasions. The massive Norman keep was built in 1095 and since then was used as a prison to members of the Scottish aristocracy. During the Wars of the Roses, Bamburgh was a Lancastrian stronghold that came under fierce attack. By the early 1600s, Bamburgh was ruinous and in private hands, those of the local Forster family. It later became a hospital and a school, before being bought by the wealthy local industrialist, Lord Armstrong, who began the work of restoration but died before it was completed. Still owned today by the Armstrong family, Bamburgh Castle is open to the public. (https://www.historic-uk.com/DestinationsUK/Bamburgh-Castle/)

We visited Banburgh Castle a few years ago, and standing on the beach to get a shot like this was almost impossible because it was blowing a gale. It looks comparatively quiet here, Herb.

A lot of wind here too but it was worth chancing wind in my eyes and lens to get this. Glad you liked it.

Hi Gordon. This was taken at the end of our walk past the front of the castle and up to the lighthouse. The light was not perfect at all but I have managed to make the best of that.

Two beautiful images Herb. It's good to see a castle that is not half in ruin!
Thank you also for the interesting information.

A surprisingly complete castle Rosa. We have in fact taken a tour once inside but that was many years ago and certainly not on digital format. My pleasure to provide some notes too.

Always glad that you enjoy my stuff Dave. The lighting was interesting to say the least and quite different from the light on the other side as we passed earlier (and I shall post in due course too).

The history lesson thanks mainly to Historic UK.

Best wishes. Herb

Beautifully composed Herb..............the castle looks very formidable sitting up there on top of the rocky edifice, with views in all directions.

Seen large the amount of wonderful detail you've captured is obvious and I love the green surroundings and the line of sand at the bottom of the frame. Good to see some people in the grounds for scale and also those down on the beach. A lovely sky too!

An interesting link as well.........thanks for sharing.

A fine end to our walk and a very satisfying resulting picture of the castle. It is indeed very imposing from all sides. Glad you liked this grass and sand view with the odd couple too. The sky I just managed to coax out what little blue there was.

Cheers and y pleasure too to share the extra details. Herb
