Drinking fountain of Bamburgh

14 Jan 2023 9 11 140
This is situated very near the castle in the main square of Bamburgh in Northumbria. Actually it is described as 'The Old Animal drinking fountain'. The fountain dates from the early 19th Century and is grade II listed. See PiP for the square itself. Enjoy.

HBM from Bamburgh

Another from last years trip here. This just south of the lighthouse and north of the castle. A great place for a picnic. Enjoy the day.

Bamburgh Lighthouse

30 Nov 2022 20 20 187
Set just north of Bambugh here is an unusual lighthouse. Established in 1910 and never manned. It is the most northerly land-based lighthouse in England. It was discontinued in 1975 but is still monitored and controlled by Trinity House in Harwich. We are only 20 miles from the Scotland border here. This view from the north to the south shows the Farne Islands with its own lighthouse too. See PiP for closer look with bigger wall, from the south. Nice full screen, enjoy the day.

HBM - When the fret comes in.

31 Oct 2022 21 19 277
Here on the coast of Northumbria just north of Seahouses is one of Britain’s finest and biggest beaches. As it is on the north east then a common phenomenon is this sea-mist (fret) that can come and go in moments. We can see many beach strollers and also some surfers here as well as the very imposing Bamburgh castle in the far background. The benches? - well they are for the many coastal walkers who just like to enjoy the view and take in the sun or perhaps enjoy their picnics. The Pip shows another view taken on a different day. Nice full screen HBM, enjoy the day.

Northumbrian Seascape

As the sea-fret envelopes the seashore we have here almost a painting effect by the old masters. This taken just north of the Northumbrian village of Seahouses. Enjoy full screen.

Bamburgh and its castle

16 Nov 2022 17 27 168
Almost looking like it could have been built just a few years go, this is the village view of its high walls and towers. It is still intact and inhabited today and is a very popular tourist destination. Just at the base of the walls near the white van is the village cricket field. Not many chances of broken windows by the cricket ball in that side of the castle. Nice full screen. - Contrast this view with the sand-side PiP view. Have a great day.

Bamburgh Castle at sunset

20 Sep 2022 22 24 267
A dramatic view of this castle here in Northumberland. Since AD 547 it has been a Royal Fortress, a Norman Stronghold and a home. This was the scene from just across the road from our rented cottage. A better sunset was to be had but then there would have been no foreground detail as seen here. Enjoy full screen. more info: www.bamburghcastle.com/castle

Bambugh’s Arthurian castle

08 Nov 2022 23 23 211
A traditional view of this famous Northumbrian castle from the north seaward side. One can easily imagine knights practicing their swordsmanship in the high grounds or even jousting here on the sands. With a little more imagination, a dragon might be seen circling above too. Described In medieval text as Lancelot’s Joyeus Garde Castle in the Arthurian tradition. Once the ancient capital of the powerful kingdom of Northumbria. There has been some kind of defensive structure at Bamburgh since at least the 6th century after constant Viking invasions. The massive Norman keep was built in 1095 and since then was used as a prison to members of the Scottish aristocracy. During the Wars of the Roses, Bamburgh was a Lancastrian stronghold that came under fierce attack. By the early 1600s, Bamburgh was ruinous and in private hands, those of the local Forster family. It later became a hospital and a school, before being bought by the wealthy local industrialist, Lord Armstrong, who began the work of restoration but died before it was completed. Still owned today by the Armstrong family, Bamburgh Castle is open to the public. (https://www.historic-uk.com/DestinationsUK/Bamburgh-Castle/) Enjoy full screen

Sea fret at Bamburgh, Northumbria

14 Sep 2022 19 19 161
A first walk for us in bright weather on this long beach backed by large sand dunes. Within minutes our vision is dampened by this mist that swirls around us. Just as quickly it disappears again leaving us to think ‘what happened there!’ Sea-fret: a peculiar phenomenon which takes the edge off our warm summer days here in the North East – and it can be so thick and dark so as to appear like smoke. Officially known as "coastal fog" by weather experts and is caused by warm air condensing over the cold. Essential full screen
