Blacksod Lighthouse

Blacksod Lighthouse
Our trip to this end of the Belmullet peninsular gives us a look at the harbour (pip) and its unique castellated granite lighthouse. Through automation the lighthouse keepers have left but it is still open to visitors on appointment.
A 150-year-old lighthouse, it sits resolute at the end of Blacksod’s working pier, where the catch of the day will always include wild Atlantic lobster. The area boasts jaw-dropping scenery and offers sanctuary for Irish whales and dolphins.
In 1969 a man named Tom McClean rowed from Newfoundland to Blacksod Bay. He used the telephone in Blacksod Lighthouse to phone his sponsors, Gilette Razor Company. As part of his sponsorship deal he was to appear cleanly shaven when meeting the press at Blacksod Pier!

Hi Keith. Always glad to see you and read your views. Yes, I had thought about mentioning the helicopter pad. Like you I thought that article was very interesting. I think the lighthouse would have looked better in the sun. I have others too from the seaward direction that you might yet see.

Best Wishes. Herb

You capture cloudy skies really well Herb. I guess we have a lot of practice in the UK...they are not easy though. The coloured shutters enhance the picture well, and it's nice to see it in the background of your PiP.

Have a good new week. Cheers, Rosa.

A superb shot, Herb!
The edifice is a little odd but very interesting and it's actually quite attractive and photogenic, yet I can't put my finger on why this should be!

Just seen your comment here Rosa. The skies we have to master, or they look simply dark grey or white. Yes the lighthouse shutters do add a bit of character and colour.

Cheers, Herb

I can quite understand your comment here Andy. Not the prettiest lighthouse on the block but one full of character.
