Saddel Abbey

Saddel Abbey
Standing amongst a graveyard is this ancient Abbey. Building of the abbey began in 1148 and it is thought that the end came in 1493.
We see here the remains of the north transept and choir of the abbey church. Nothing is left of the much larger nave and the south transept of the church. And almost nothing remains of the square of buildings surrounding a cloister that once stood to the south of the abbey church.

Good to see you back in circulation Gordon. Yes, these very old historic buildings are always interesting.

Graveyards, especially those as old as this one are normally good for an interesting photo and you've not disappointed me here Herb. I like the old abbey walls with the growth of grass and mosses on the top and you've captured all that detail beautifully.

An interesting link too.........I've had a quick look but also bookmarked it for more reading later (otherwise I get carried away and forget I'm supposed to be commenting on photos)!

This was a really interesting graveyard too. As you will know by now, there was also a sheltered building nearby with histories and artefacts of the Abbey. Great that you liked it all.

Best wishes, Herb
