Dove Stones canyon

Dove Stones canyon
A very different view of my favourite reservoir here in Greenfield near my home in Oldham. After a year of fires and drought the reservoir is at an all-time low of water. In all my life of visiting here (55yrs at least) I have never seen it like this. I am stood some 400mts from the water intake but the river here is at least 50 ft below what it normally is, and that grows to some 100ft just some short distance down. As I stood here, after some torrential rain there were even boulders rolling along with the current and the sides were still crumbling into the water (the black peat water banks here are about 2mts high), I then made a hasty retreat back to the grass and trees above -where the water normally stands.

Thanks for yet another visit Jaap -you must sit at your computer even more than me? I hope you saw the PiPs too. Again, your comment 'Honours Me!'.

This has reached critical point, Herb. Just as well the drought conditions have finished. One can see why folks are discouraged from swimming in reservoirs.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Amelia club
Hi Amelia, yes it sure has reached a critical point. As it is, the next dam up (Yeoman Hey) is only half empty and the one higher up still was virtually full. Nonetheless, I think it will be a long time before this is full again. Fortunately, of the three, this is used only to supply the ongoing river and not for drinking. During the hot summer, I saw many young people swimming from the rock cliffs just further down on the right hand side here, before the levels went down so much.
Regards, Herb
ps, hope you saw the adjacent two pictures via the PiPs

A fine shot of our recent drought conditions, as you say it will be a long time recovering.
Like the pips too, what software do you use to create them?

Welcome my friend, as you say a while before I see any level of water in here again. PiPs -you don't need any new software at all. Just a full club membership. All you have to do is have the intended PIPs already in Ipernity. Here is an official guide: www.ipernity.com/group/zoomin/discuss/189930 but I have sent you an Ipermail with my own guide too. Enjoy, Herb

A fine picture as always Herb, with a disturbing narrative ~ I looked at the two PIPs too ~ Here's hoping that the autumn starts to fill it up again ~~~

Hi again Nick -yes I suppose I have the knack of writing such things as well as showing them on here. Good that you saw the Pips that just extend the story. Already no real rain forecast for some weeks but like you, we hope that our normal weather will kick in to refill this.

Have you seen the level lower ? Looking at one of your PiP I think I have but not sure I have a photo to back that up.
Herb Riddle club has replied to Colin Ashcroft club
Hi Colin, great to see you. I was walking around here just on Tuesday on shooting the Pips, with my mate who has also been walking this area for 55+ years and he like me thought we had never seen it lower. He had the idea that he had seen it like this just after construction. the two reservoirs a little higher both had more water in than this and so it appears they are trying to fill them up before this one. As you say -those old snaps on film and paper often disappear.

Wow, that is still hot for this time of year Malik. As, you say, all a product of climate-change surely.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Fred Fouarge club
Ha,ha Fred, I did not retreat before going even further down first -maybe a little foolishly. On returning here a few days later with my friend and his dog, his dog just ran straight down into the water, which was not as strong as it was here. Glad you like it.

On the plus side............the drought has given you a chance to get some cracking photos without the water............including this superb image and the one in the PiPs.

It's going to need a lot of rain to fill it again, at least you have seen how it used to be before the area was flooded
6 years ago.
Herb Riddle club has replied to Peter Castell club
Yiu are right there Peter. A glimpse of how it must have been. I could still see black tree stumps along the old river with ran through this lake. Normally up to 100feet below water.

Perfectly composed with the curving water channel and the bordering rocks. The sky is superb too!
The drought and fires have been worrying, I'm afraid we are going to have summers like this more often...

A lovely shot Herb.. I do think very wide lenses provide an interesting perspective if - as you have here .. included plenty of low angle coverage... / .. Keep shooting.. Cheers from Dave.

Herb Riddle club has replied to David G Johnson club
Good to see you again my friend. Yes, the ultra wide comes into its own with scenes like this but as you say one has to be careful. - I invariably try to get low angles with this lens. No question about keeping on shooting. You too...

I am amazed at the drought you are having there, Herb. We have had just the opposite on the East Coast of the US this past August. My garden looks uncharacteristically lush for this time of year!
Herb Riddle club has replied to Valfal club
Hi Valfal, nice to see you here. yes, the whole of Western Europe was very hot and dry this year, and here we see the consequences, even in my home town of Oldham in North West England. Dry reservoirs meant for the first time in years some water restrictions were put in place. Like you, my pal in Western Australia has had the most unusual amount of rain and cold during their Winter now -seeing full reservoirs for the first time in years as the East of Auss was burning. The US too has had strange weather this year with all the fires over in the west. At least on your East coast your gardens did well! Got to be some winners my friend!
