Mont Saint-Michel takes its name from the patron saint St Michael the Archangel, to whom the imposing Abbey is dedicated. History has it that the Archangel Michael appeared three times in a dream to the Bishop of Avranches, Aubert, ordering him to build a church in his honour on the small rocky islet. The first two times, the bishop ignored the Saint's requests until the Saint, enraged, pierced his skull with a touch of his finger and only then did the bishop decide to fulfil the archangel's requests (the relic of the bishop's skull is kept at the Saint-Gervais Church in Avranches). It was on 16 October 709 when Bishop Aubert had the first church consecrated and since then it has not ceased to attract the curious and pilgrims from all over the world.
