Bomber 134

The two aircraft in this image were water-bombers, working on the huge fires in south-east Australia during late 2019-early 2020. The nearest aircraft, on the left, was a C130 with the identification "Bomber 134" and had come from the USA with its 3 man crew. Memorialising its sad loss with its crew shortly after, three years ago on 23 January 2020, in a combination of huge fires, bad winds, and mountainous terrian. Brave men and a sadly remembered event. In the PiP, smoke from nearby fires at the time.

Community battery

The massive fires of 2019 left the small community of Mallacoota isolated and all but the firefighters needing to be rescued by Navy ships. The fires also highlighted the vulnerability of the power supply, with blackouts common as the township is at the end of a 240km power line through bushland. As a consequence, this 1 MWh community battery with a back-up generator has been installed since the fires. This was taken through the fence surrounding it. Happy Fence Friday and have a good weekend, everyone.

Don't upset nesting Magpies

Australian Magpies normally are peaceful birds, but they become very territorial and protective during nesting season - sometimes (though certainly not always) with people, but always when a raptor such as this Whistling Kite comes too close to the nest. This Kite was being given a very hard time and beat a retreat, after even going inverted to see its attacker (see also PiPs).

Touring the lake

Heading out on the coastal lake at Mallacoota in Victoria, on the "MV Loch Ard", originally built as a ferry over a century ago and, now restored, operating lake tours. See also PiP (previous image). Wishing everyone a Happy Bench Monday, followed by a good week.
