Port Gamble, Washington

Port Gamble, Washington
This week's SSC challenge: "History"

This week features a trip to the historic mill town of Port Gamble

Built in 1853 it is one of the oldest towns in Washington state and actually predates Washington becoming a state in 1889. All the houses and buildings in the town are well over a hundred years old and were fashioned after a town in Maine, where the founders originated, giving the town a unique personality.

This is St. Paul's Church which is no longer used for weekly services, but you can still be married here if you choose. A couple of our son's friends got married here last year. The two Redwood trees that stand next to it are easily as old as the church and may even be older.

Carly Simon from her debut album "Carly Simon" (1971) (My favorite song about marriage.)

I have an American nephew who, during his first visit to France at the age of 15, declared peremptorily when he saw a large square decorated with houses from the end of the 17th century: "In America, when it is as old, all is destroyed ..."
The boy was young ... and he has changed his lens ever since.
Beyond this anecdote, it is comforting to see that we are busy rehabilitating the testimonies of the Past !

Yes, he was somewhat correct. A lot of places fall into disrepair here, but some are faithfully looked after and also restored. Merci, Patrick. :)

What a beautiful church building, and I love how you captured it, Karen! It's interesting that the town's buildings were inspired by architecture found in New England; except for the redwood trees in front of it, this church would have been quite at home in Maine!

Yes, I guess the founders were wanting to have something of "home" in their new home. It's a neat, little town and has a cool, old cemetery too. I will post more pics in the coming days. Thanks, Val. :)

Interesting that town was modelled after one in Maine - that's quite fascinating! I love the sun peaking through the tree!
