I didn't know

I didn't know until I looked today at two telephones I have passed by a
thousand times that one of them has a keyboard, with an Alt Key even.
Thirty-odd years ago one of my neighbours was deaf and she used a keyboard
for conversing with her friends over the phone lines. I never realised it
had become a public thing. I guess I just never looked.
