I seldom want the weight they offer. I suppose it's all to do with hygiene and labour costs. And sales, since customers buy more than they otherwise would.

It also leads to food waste. If you don't have a family of 6 to feed, but need to buy fruit, some will invariably be chucked out uneaten. Oranges and lemons are a case in point. Until recently my local supermarket never sold these loose. I have to say, though, that I am lucky in that I have a good traditional daily market nearby.
