No, Eric, it's comes from the fact that the stem of the sundial is called "gnomon" in scientific language.

I didn"t know either, until I heard it in a broadcast game. Like "placomusophile"!! This is a person who collects the round metal plates resting over the cork of each bottle of Champagne or sparkling wine, they vary in design and are typically marked with the logo of the firm that produces each bottle... Of course, it's not vital to know that, but a nice trivia for a dinner party;-))
