Rat Portage (Portage-aux-Rats) is now known as Kenora - located close to the Manitoba border. I'm guessing the First Nations people shown in this pic must be Ojibwe, and possibly Métis. They were colonized by the Jesuits, and would have traded (furs) heavily with the French settlers.
Theirs is a sad history, as both sides during the Seven Years War (British and French forces) exploited the Native American population for territory,gain and profit.
