Date: As written on border: July 19, 1923
Publisher / Photographer: This was from a set of photos taken by a traveller who came up to Manitoba through the central U.S., headed east to the Maritimes, and continued south through the eastern U.S.
Notation: This appears to be a storefront at Victoria Beach. The man on the steps appears in many of the other photos and must be the travelling companion of the photographer. An aboriginal woman and two of her children are on the platform behind him. See close-up below:

Notation: Pretty stunning message in the face of our current understandings/perspectives of colonialism, racism and discrimination.
Opening the flap on the chest area releases and accordion strip of eleven small images of indigenous people - all derived from images on actual postcards.

Notation: J. H. Clark was a photographer and reasonably prolific postcard publisher, publishing lithographic images of his photos as early as 1906. His postcard images were primarily of scenes in the Rocky Mountains but he also captured scenes in Manitoba & Northwestern Ontario.
At some point in his career, he took an impressive set of photographs of first nations people. This one, entitled "Miskoopenaises, Squaw, Chippewa Indians", was #5 in a series.
