PMB067 WINNIPEG - LOUISE BRIDGE

30 Jan 2016 1 423
PHOTOGRAPH Approx. 10 x 18 cm Date: Not evident, but this bridge (Winnipeg's first bridge) was built in 1881. The lack of trees and shrubbery suggest that this is likely a very early image of the bridge. Publisher / Photographer: Mitchell, Winnipeg (most likely J. F. Mitchell). Notation: The Louise Bridge was opened on July 26, 1881,, crossing the Red River to from Elmwood to Point Douglas. It was part of the deal that brought the Canadian Pacific Railway to Winnipeg. The CPR was considering a route further north near Selkirk. But Winnipeg sweetened its offer by promising to construct a bridge across the Red River which the CPR could use for free. The Louise Bridge was constructed to convey traffic and pedestrians as well as the trains. It did so until about 1905. At that point, the CPR determined it was not strong enough to carry its newer and heavier trains - so a new railway bridge was constructed further south, With that development, the City of Winnipeg replaced the original Louise Bridge in 1911.

PMB043 W.F. WHITE'S TAXIDERMY MUSEUM - FRONT VIEW

08 Oct 2015 1 241
PHOTOGRAPH 15.25 x 12 cm Date: Likely approximately 1903. (Business was mentioned in a newspaper article that year.) Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified Notation: This is a front view of W. F. White’s Museum at 563 Main Street in Winnipeg. To the best of my knowledge, the building would have been located on the east side of Main Street, somewhere on the first block north of its intersection with Market Avenue. I suspect Mr. White is one of the two gentlemen posing on the threshold - hopefully, the less blurry of the two. I am not certain what the actual name of the business was. In a newspaper article of the time, it was referred to as "W. F. White's Museum. On the bottom of one of its products, "W. F. White Curios" was inscribed. In this picture, one of the signs (bottom right) appears to read "W. F. White Tax(idermy)." On an accompanying photograph, signage reads "Curiosity Emporium" and "Free Museum". Whatever it was called, it definitely would have drawn me in. It seems like First Nations artifacts as well as pelts and mountings of Canadian wildlife constituted a large part of its inventory.

PMB060 (CAMPING BANK OF RED RIVER) HAROLD HAMBER…

02 Oct 2015 202
PHOTOGRAPH 10 x 6 cm Date: Not evident but likely about 1901 Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified Notation: There are two people in the photo. The older gentleman at the entrance to the tent is identified as GHS. I haven't been able to discover his full name, but he is the same person credited with having the first motor boat on the Red River (shown in another photo in this series). The young man on the left is identified as Harold Hamber. Born in 1883, Harold Hamber was 18 yrs old at the time of the 1901 census -which is likely when this photo was taken. His father was Frederick (Eric) Hamber - a math professor at St. John’s College. I am going to speculate that the Hambler family resided somewhere near the college - which would be in the immediate vicinity of this campsite. Being roughly the same age as Billy Drewry (pictured in the other of these campsite photos) and living in the same neighbourhood, I think it is likely that the two boys were friends and were visiting these campers on the same day. At the time of the 1911 census, Harold was in the real estate business. In 1912, he married Nora Calquhoun. By the time of the 1916 census, Harold was an insurance broker. He and Nora were living at 140 Lilac Street with their three-year-old son Eric (presumably named after Harold’s father). Sadly Harold, a Captain in the Canadian Army, died in WWI on June 22, 1917. For more information on Harold's father Frederick Hamber, see: www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/people/hamber_fem.shtml)

PMB059 CAMPING BANK OF RED RIVER ST JOHNS WPG - (B…

02 Oct 2015 3 1 251
PHOTOGRAPH 6 x 11 cm Date: Not evident, but likely about 1901. Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified Notation: The caption reads; "Camping Bank of Red River St Johns, Wpeg. (Billy Drewry)" I am assuming that this canvas tent is probably pitched on or near the grounds of present-day St. John's Park. There are two folks pictured in the image. The older fellow is not identified and, because of that, I wonder if he isn't the owner of the album that these pictures came from. The younger man is identified as Billy Drewry. My best guess is that he is William Starkey Drewry, son of Edward Drewry who founded Winnipeg’s Drewry Brewry. Drewry's was located on the west side of the Red River at the base of the Redwood Bridge and backing on what is now St. John’s Park. The Drewry family home, Redwood, was on the same property - which may explain how Billy entered the scene. Born in 1844, Billy became well-educated. He was superintendent and chemist at Drewry’s Limited for almost 20 years, later moving to Kenora. He died in 1947. For more information, see: www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/people/drewry_ws.shtml)

PHOTOGRAPH 7 x 7 cm Date: 1888 (from caption) Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified Notation: This is one of seven photographs that I acquired from a very old album. The caption reads; "Penitentiary, Stoney Mountain Man 1888 Top floor, in roof, used as Insane Hospital."

PMB056 BUFFALO STONEY MOUNTAIN

01 Oct 2015 1 188
PHOTOGRAPH 11 x 7 cm Date: 1888 (From caption) Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified Notation: This is one of seven photographs that I acquired from a very old album. The caption reads "Buffalo Stoney Mountain 1888 part of Col Bedson's herd." This herd was actually am important part of Manitoba's history as it played a significant role in saving the North American Buffalo (plains bison) from extinction. In 1879, Col. Samuel Lawrence Bedson, Warden of the Stoney Mountain Penitentiary, purchased a small herd of 13 animals. The protected herd thrived and by 1988, numbered 100 animals. In the same year Col Bedford sold the herd. to several different buyers. Descendants of this herd now form parts of the herds in Banff, Riding Mountain, Wainwright, and Elk Island Park. For more information on the historical significance of this herd, please see: www.manitobabison.ca/about-the-bison/history-of-bison
