WP1981 WPG - (LOOKING NORTH FROM BROADWAY)

WP1981 WPG - (LOOKING NORTH FROM BROADWAY)
POSTCARD

Date: Not evident. Posted, but postal strike is unclear.

Publisher / Photographer: Published for the Canadian Pacific railway News Service.

Notation: I have only seen this view before on a real photo postcard. It is looking north across Broadway, in the foreground. On the left is Garry Street - and on the right is Fort Street.

Interesting "Hand Colored" note in the bottom right.

Very nice image. I guess it would be 1914 (+/- 1 year) since downtown is pretty much "finished" at this point. The Avenue Building has been rebuilt (not sure how soon that was done after the March 1913 fire) but there is no sign of the Paris Building next to it as yet. Just to the left of centre (with the 7 columns of triplet windows) is the Winnipeg Tribune building at 257 Smith Street -- don't see that in postcard views very often. The old rink in the foreground is also something one doesn't see a lot of.

Thanks for pulling all that out of the image. It was the roof of that old rink that drew me to the card. You are right, it doesn't show up in very many images and, because I don't know that much about it. Thus, it has some allure.

The "old rink" (large roof in the foreground was the Winnipeg Auditorium. Built in 1898, it was primarily a huge indoor skating rink and the early home to Winnipeg's hockey teams and tournaments. Even Stanley Cup challenges were held there. It burned down in 1926.
