Þeistareykir is the northernmost volcanic system in Iceland, consisting of a low Holocene shield and a fissure swarm extending from Mývatn in the south to the coast of Tjörnes in the north. The whole area is crossed by numerous rifts and grabens where the Eurasian and American plates diverge.

Þeistareykir ist das nördlichste Vulkansystem in Island. Es besteht aus einem niedrigen Schildvulkan aus dem Holozän und einem Spaltenschwarm, der sich von Mývatn im Süden bis zur Tjörnes- Halbinsel im Norden erstreckt. Das ganze Gebiet ist von Gräben und Rissen durchzogen, die beim Auseinanderdriften der eurasischen und amerikanischen Platte entstehen.
