Húsavík

Húsavík
Húsavík was left by its last permanent inhabitants in 1972. Today it consists of 2 houses and a barn. The cemetery has two crosses left, the other graves have been lost to the sea due to erosion. The tiny church is maintained in pristine condition.

Húsavík wurde 1972 von den letzten ständigen Bewohnern verlassen. 2 Häuser sind noch übrig, außerdem eine Scheune und 2 Grabkreuze auf dem Friedhof. Der Rest der Gräber ist durch Erosion ins Meer gerutscht. Die winzige Kirche wird in gepflegtem Zustand erhalten.

Dank dir, poly! Ja, gutes Wetter soll es manchmal auch auf Island geben, es ändert sich aber schnell;-) Wir hatten Glück, in der Gegend zu sein, die das beste Wetter hatte, Reykjavik hat den schlechtesten Sommer seit Beginn der Wetteraufzeichnungen...

Amazingly clear details when viewed in Original Size. Dramatic scenery all round, Gudrun, and that tiny chapel must have been a joy to visit. I have seen quite a few cemeteries in Norway with iron crosses very like the one in the PiP.

Thanks a lot, Amelia! The church was typically Icelandic, we saw quite of few of this type. As to the crosses- Iceland was under Danish rule like Norway so it's not surprising to see similarities. Many of the "historic" wooden houses in Iceland were Norwegian "catalogue" (prefabricated) houses, shipped from there and then put together.

Das ist das Ende der Welt, Gudrun, im Panoramafoto sehr eindrucksvoll! Wie schön, dass das Kirchlein gepflegt und geehrt wird, somit erweist man den verlorenen Gräbern noch die Ehre.

Herzlichen Dank, Uli! Wenn man sich vorstellt, dass alle diese Buchten früher bewohnt waren! Im Winter waren die Leute oft lange Zeit auf sich allein gestellt.
Angeblich hat man die Knochen aus den abgerutschten Gräbern alle gesammelt und verwahrt sie in einer Kiste in der Kirche- die Kiste konnten wir aber nicht entdecken...

Danke, Dany! Es gibt in Island in den Ost- und Westfjorden so viele davon... Erst ganz lansam kommen in manche davon wieder Leute zurück, meist leben sie dann vom Tourismus.

Lost places... beautifuly photographed, with emotion.
Something bothers me, are there two Husavik? Because we rented a boat to go for whale watching from a place also called Husavik, but it was a village with a port, shops...
I would have liked to see this lost one, I saw on the google location but with tablet (I am not at home) I couldn’t get to see both.

Thanks very much, Isabel! Yes, there is a Húsavík in the north, we passed through here too but didn't go whalewatching. I'm looking forward to your photos!
I guess there are even more than two Húsavík in Iceland as many place names tend to repeat themselves;-) For this place here you need 4x4 transportation, the "road" has an F.

We were 8 persons in a van, no 4WD. What I would have liked would have been the oportunity to visit less turistical spots, but the tour was organized for one full week there (+2 days for flying there and back), it was organized to show the classical musts and no time for more...

I guess on a first visit to Iceland the touristy places are a must. Mine was also an organized tour with an Icelandic firm. They have mainly German speaking guests but I see that they also offer English language tours. As many of their customers come back year after year they also have itinaries off the beaten track. en.naturreisen.is
There's also this bus company who offer trips ito the interiour from Mývatn or Húsavìk: fjallasyn.is
Our 4x4 bus and driver came from this company and we also met the boss, they really know their stuff- highly recommended!

And for us even worse, Portugal is a poor country compared to Deurschland and in Iceland buying food in the supermarkets cost as much as a meal in an expensive restaurant here!!!

Besten Dank, Tanja! Dieser Friedhof bzw. die Reste davon waren berührnd. Anscheinend hat man die Gebeine aus den Gräbern, die schon ins Meer abgreutscht sind, aufgesammelt und bewahrt sie in einer Truhe auf. Allerdings konnten wir die in der Kirche nicht entdecken.
