Hvitserkur

Borgarfjörður eystri is the second largest area of rhyolitic rock in Iceland, consisting of 4 extinct volcanic centres. The Hvitserkur ignimbrite is thought to have filled the caldera of the Breiðuvík volcano before it was heavily eroded by glaciation. Hvitserkur is crossed by basalt dykes and topped by basalt (more detail in the 2nd note).

Borgarfjörður eystri ist das zweitgrößte Gebiet mit rhyolitischem Gestein in Island, bestehend aus 4 erloschenen Vulkanen. Der Hvitserkur- Ignimbrit hat vermutlich einmal, vor der Erosion durch die Eiszeitgletscher, die Caldera des Breiðuvík-Vulkans gefüllt. Hvitserkur ist von Basalt-Dykes durchzogen und trägt eine Kappe aus Basalt (mehr Detail im 2. PiP)

Unglaublich schöne Farben, Gudrun! Interessant sind die dunklen Linien, die sich durch die Oberflächen ziehen, ähnlich wie Craquelé. Sie sind wahrscheinlich durch Faltung, Schichtung und Berstung entstanden. In die Fugen ist dann flüssige Lavamassa eingedrungen oder ähnlich...

Herzlichen Dank, Uli! Dieser Berg ist etwas Besonderes! Die dunklen Linien sind Basaltgänge (Dykes sagt man auch im Deutschen), das heiße Magma hat Auftrieb und sucht sich dort einen Weg, wo vielleicht schon Schwächen/ Risse im Gestein sind. Die meisten Vulkane haben nicht nur eine Magmakammer, sondern unzählige dieser Gänge, nur sieht man die im Normalfall nicht.

Die Erosion hat ein schönes Muster in das Gestein gefräst. Toll sieht auch der leuchtend grün gesäumte Bach aus. Man sieht sofort, wo es feucht ist.
