Borgarfjörður eystri is the second largest area of rhyolitic rock in Iceland, consisting of 4 extinct volcanic centres. The Hvitserkur ignimbrite is thought to have filled the caldera of the Breiðuvík volcano before it was heavily eroded by glaciation. Hvitserkur is crossed by basalt dykes and topped by basalt (more detail in the 2nd note).
