Detmold - Ernst

Detmold was the capital of the Principality of Lippe from 1468 until 1918 and then capital of the Free State of Lippe until 1947, when Lippe was incorporated into the new German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Detmold has a population of about 75.000, the "Hochschule für Musik Detmold" ("University of Music Detmold"), the "Landestheater" and a castle in the center of the town.
Here is Ernst, Regent of Lippe, surrounded by his subjects. After Woldemar, Prince of Lippe, had died childless in 1895, a long dispute started, which ended, when the House of Lippe-Biesterfeld suceeded the regency. Ernst, Count of Lippe-Biesterfeld, was regent here from 1897 to 1904.
