The Starry Night

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) The distorted visions of van Gogh anticipated the widespread tension and torment that marked the age of anxiety. The tragic Dutchman absorbed impressions in Paris, but under the burning sun of southern France he went beyond portraying the world of external reality. He feverishly painted his own inner world of intense emotion and wild imagination, thereby contributing greatly to modern expressionism. (Collection, The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Acquired through the Little P. Bliss Bequest 1889, Oil on canvas, 29 X 36 1/4)
