The Card Players

Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) An immensely important and revolutionary painter Cezanne rejected his early impressionistic style as too light and delicate. In this 1892 masterpiece he shows the dignity of all human existence and experience, no matter how ordinary or commonplace. One can also sense the devotion to form and solidity that made Cezenne the father of modern abstract painting (The Metropolitan Museum of Art: Bequest of Stephen C. Clark 1960)
