Not sure why. Don't forget there is a similar step pattern on the other side. I think I see what you saw, but in fact the path on the other side of the stile is not at the height of the stile but at the height of the path I'm currently standing on!

They certainly made use of all the granite around when they were doing walkways and stiles etc, didn't they? I do love to see areas like this - just know I won't be able to walk there myself, so thanks for showing it to us.

I did mention earlier (perhaps to you?) that there are moves afoot to do away with all these stiles and make the paths accessible to all.
