Different terminologies and meanings. In Cornwall, a stone wall is called a fence! But i think a wall is a wall and a fence is ... OK ... I'm too tired to argue. You win!

Yup; as in "this is a particularly gnarly problem" although 'thorny' is more usual.
But I'm not sure about 'the younger set'. My father would use 'gnarly' more often than I would and I would use it more often than a youngster. So maybe a word on the way out. It's a good word, so I'm pleased if it's use is increasing among the young on your side of the pond!

Huh--interesting! I wonder if it's a older Briticism that was picked up by the younger folks here. You still see "thorny" here too, but it strikes me as old-fashioned, even something of a cliche--problems are always "thorny".
