A really hot day in the Sierra de La Cabrera

Fabulous balancing rock.

I didn't bother mentioning the rocking stone in the title or notes, I knew it would be everyone's focus!

Simmering

My ears weren't just simmering, Nick; they were positively sizzling!

How hot? - when is it too hot to go out ?

A good question, Colin.
It is normally a dry heat here, and even when it is 40ºC + in Madrid centre (which it was on that day,) the surrounding Sierras are generally a little cooler and with a satisfying breeze. Except when they are not! On this day the temperature may have been 'only' in the upper 30s, but it was horribly humid and it was one of those rare days when the flies were having an outdoor party; except for about twice a year - usually a couple of days sometime in May and then in September - Madrid and its environs are mercifully free of flies!.
Sorry, that was the long answer.
The short answer is that 35ºC + when humid, is too hot for an enjoyable walk, especially the long uphill sections!

Andy... I seem to have missed quite a spread of your recent pictures... I took a look back - and all very nice too... /.. Btw. I would have to try that boulder up there ... for movement.

I find that happens to me too: I wonder if it is an ipernity flaw, one of those we are told we have to live with because the resolution would be totally off-budget?? if so ... oh well!!

No. If you see a recent Logan Rock photo of mine, you will see what happened to a young naval officer who tried just such a thing ... all too successfully and was almost lynched by the locals because he had destroyed their tourist earnings. He was forced to put it back. He did with the help of naval winching gear but it never rocked after and the cost crippled him!

I would never do that. In some regions you even will be accused when you take some stones with you.

And quite right too! I even dislike too many stones on a carn and as for that recent fashion of making silly balancing pebble nonsenses on beaches ... well, words fail me. And yet many people who I normally respect on ip (I don't 'do' any other social media - except LinkedIn), leap to the defence of these 'artists'!
I just don't get it.
I visit nature to see nature, not someone's ego-in-stone.

If truth be told, Rosa there are so many stones like this that I hardly saw it until I looked at the pics I'd taken later that day! So no angles and this was as seen!

Wow that must have been very sore to have the tops of your ears burnt. The sun is so much hotter in Spain than in the UK. I do like the stone balancing so carefully on the top there.

Hi, Andy. Thank you for your visit and comments and for sharing the contact. This is a perfect time to visit the galleries of people one might have missed before. The lack of new images gets us to explore the positive wealth of "old" images here on Ipernity! I have only been a member for a little over one year, so there is not much that really qualifies as "old" in my gallery. Reposting previous images is also not quite as satisfying for me. One of the things I enjoy is captioning and with old photos that is already done so ... not as much fun as posting new images and coming up with little stories to go with them. I will mostly just wait for the glitch to be fixed, I think. But I keep up with developments, discussions and comments (well, mostly ... and not quite very timely). From a first quick visit of your gallery, I am struck by your attraction for and by the beautiful compositions of rocky landscapes. Here you really do justice to the beauty and contrasts of the Sierra strewn with wild flowers and grasses. Worth getting your ears sunburned!

Thank you for your kind and thoughtful appraisal of my gallery and also your thoughts on uploading old photos again. I share your views on the latter and, because some of mine come from an old platform (Panoramio - which was killed off by Google in 2016), many of their associated notes are a little out of date, enough for me to warrent slight amendments to the captioning.
Yes, I haven't been as diligent in revisiting members' past output to date so I am enjoying the opportunity to catch up with pre 2016 shots. Here in Madrid we are snowed in and this, tiogether with lockdown for our district, gives me no further excuse!
Let's hope that ipernity can recover. I get mixed feelings when I read the IMA pages of notes and comments; more optimistic at times then less so. But in 2017, we came through and I pray we can do so again.
In the meantime I will enjoy delving into your gallery a little more in the comming days and weeks.
