my understanding is that this is a really ancient flower. i used to have one growing on the side of our house - then someone cleaning up the yard in the fall/winter actually pulled it out of the ground. so sad, and i haven't replaced it yet. so thank for showing me your mom's! it is beautiful and i love how the fence adds to the photo.

A pity. I would plant another as soon as possible!. There are many different varieties to choose from but this one is the most traditional. It will grow quickly in the right environment.
If possible, plant it a little bit away from the wall and train it onto it and also if possible don't plant it in exactly the same spot as the old one due to the possibility of lingering germs in the soil. But it if it was yanked out as you say, rather than succumbing to disease, you might be OK planting it in the same spot.
Well, it worked for me a few times!

•The stigmas representing the 3 Nails used in the Crucifixion.

•The style, the sponge used to moisten Christ's lips with vinegar.

•The five stamens the color of blood depict the 5 Wounds that Christ received.

•The 72 corona filaments tipped with blood red, were described as reflecting the traditional number of thorns in the crown of thorns.

•The central column- against which He was scourged.

•The ten sepals and petals represent the 10 Apostles (excluded are Judas and Peter).

•The spiraled tendrils-the lash of Christ's Scourging

•The leaves- the head of the Centurion's Spear.The under-side of the leaves were marked with dark spots to represent the thirty pieces of silver.

•The round fruit- The World Christ came to save.The fragrance - The Spices prepared by the Holy Women

I never equated the name to all of this! I live and learn every day!

We have 2 days holiday (Tuesday also in Madrid to commemorate a local rebellion against Napoleon's troops in 1808). There are too many holidays like this here. Fine if you are salaried but if like me you are paid by the hour you give classes, it's deeply annoying!!
Poor weather too which never helps!!!
But none of this can dampen the joy at knowing that ipernity has been given a chance!!!!!

These are such amazing flowers. Here in the southeastern USA, there is a native species with different colors.

In various gardens in south-east England I used to have four different varieties. The only one whose name I can remember now was a nice white one: Constance Elliott.

HFF Andy, a fence of some antiquity I fancy, lovely flowers though.

Thanks Roger. It might have been there when my parents moved in about 20 years ago but I'm not sure. I certainly helped put some fences up in their first year and this might be from that time. It was probably new then but Cornish fences experience a lot of weathering so it might be prematurely aged!!!
