Hahahaaa - I guess mothers everywhere say that exact thing! Yes, Andy, good thing you polished your shoes. When you are flattened by a bus (here, it's just an accident) the emergency doctor is shocked by dirty shoes and torn underwear (here, it's holes in underwear). Funny shot!

You are quite right; also in Blighty: holes in socks are a complete and utter no-no! Even so, I was a little bit surprised when my Mum offered to teach me how to darn socks when I was about to go off to uni!
My gentle suggestion that a course in Sanskrit or medieval South-east European History might be more to my liking met with puzzlement. I have to say that she was right all along!!! Sorry Mum!

Oooh, holey socks, definitely taboo! Only dirty drunks and trashy tramps have holes in their socks! I learned to darn them from my mother with my great-grandmother's Bakelite darning egg. You can also use a light bulb. I rarely darn one anymore, unless there is a hole in one and the other is in good shape. I must admit, though, that a course in history would be more interesting!

I still don't know how to darn a sock, Diane. Many other domestic skills; yes (I'm a dab hand with the Brasso!) - but I'm just not there yet with this one!
Perhaps I could learn it when I eventually get caught and sent to the hoosegow!

I ALWAYS had to polish my shoes too !!!

I kind of enjoyed polishing my shoes (especially Sat. night, for church on Sun.). Haven't done that in ages! I don't seem to own shoes that need polishing, anymore, nor do I go anyplace where shiny shoes would be appreciated.

Quite frankly, it's a pain. I have only one pair of 'shiny shoes' (not these which bit the dust a couple of years ago) for interviews, important students and, of course, my frequent court appearances. Casual is the way these days, I'm pleased to say!

My Dad used to tell me it was about self worth.. as much as who saw them... I suspect he was right. I still tell people it makes a difference.. and I dont think that is being old fashioned.. it IS about pride in oneself... I still wear leather shoes.. I still clean them !

Sorry to butt in again, but I couldn't agree more, especially, as I said, for special occasions such as court appearances, parole board hearings, fraud and corruption and regulatory/compliance panel grillings, and I am SOOO bored with all of those.

But it taught me to keep my (one pair of smart) shoes well polished!!!

Yup! I was really in them and they were good shoes and comfortable and not cheap. So I was sad when the shine suddenly went and couldn't be restored and they had to be chucked!
